If you had 1/1.5k....

Well, in about 3-4 weeks I'm hitting the stores for new gear. Haven't exactly decided on what I'm gonna get, so I'm hoping you guys could give me some ideas by telling me what you'd get if you were in my shoes.

Budget's about 1-1.5k. I'm considering getting a 30w amp, hopefully one with modelling and tube. Guitar wise, can't exactly decide between a Strat or a Paul(yes I realise the big difference tone-wise, but both the twang and fat tone appeals to me). Of course, this is pretty flexible, you can mention anything you'd get, including pedals and what not, as long as everything lies within the budget.

Thanks for your help guys.

On a side note, I was offered a 80's Tokai LP for 2.8k. Worth the price?

kinda hard since u didnt specify what genres u play but maybe a blackheart or
peavey vypr and mij or mim strat, HSS if u play heavier stuff and that should be a pretty versatile setup

I'm pretty flexible about the genre stuff, since I play quite a range and intending to explore more. Most probably decide on what I'll delve into depending on what I get. Eg if I'm getting a Strat, I go more into funk, clean stuff, if a Paul I'll go more into metal.

Of course, I'll never shy away from blues and rock since they're the main stuff I play. But I figured, and correct if I'm wrong, that any guitar can handle those two well. So I'm not too concerned.

wait you have a budget of 1.5k and you're thinking about a 2.8k guitar? :S

Not exactly, just that i received that offer a couple of weeks back. I might get it in a couple of months maybe, but not now. Now the 1.5k more imminent. =)

i'd say if you're looking for versatility get a HSS strat. perhaps a les paul if you're leaning towards metal but they both can do it pretty well. the only 2 amps i know with modeling capabilities and tubes are the peavey vypyrs and line 6 spider valves. look into those. haven't tried either so can't say.

its a les paul lol, not paul.
get a 1980's strat or lp copy from hub, really good items, fits your price range. those fernandes strats and burny lp's from him could rival the real deal any day

You're not going to get a Gibson LP for that price. Maybe one of the Epiphones, but to my ears the Gibson has a far superior tone - it's the wood, not just the pickups.
You may want to settle for a HSS type strat / clone.

Well based on what i know, Gibson's QC dropped until really quite jialat. If I could I rather get a Heritage, but its definitely off budget, and I also have no idea who in Singapore carries them.

don't bother with a melody maker for your budget, you should look for a studio if you're keen on a les paul. also if u can find an mij epiphone les paul custom those are really good for the price. i think i saw one in the buy/sell forum a few days ago.

How bout the PRS SE Singlecut? That's the middle between the Strats and LPs right?

Amp-wise: Tube + Effects... Try the VOX Valvetronix? Citymusic always seems to be having promotions! The 100W XL is less than $500.

how about an sg classic? or an epiphone casino?

anyway i suggest you try an epiphone lp and then a gibson lp to see/hear the difference for yourself.
