How to know if your friend, band mate or outsiders are into music?

They might say they are into music, but in their heart, they just be in a band just for the sake of being in a band.

Show off?
To impress someone?
Fame?
a follower? ( just follow what people say, eg: tell them to be in band but he or she doesnt have a opinion on its own.. just follow wad the friends says..)
Real passion?

Its like, when someone ask u to learn a song, would u like brush off and play the easy way or modified it?

or

would u take the initiative to learn the real chords for guitar and the right beats for drums?

like some ppl, they are not good in tempo.. to me, they could slowly improve their playing..

but for some ppl, they dont know the structure of the song, to me its no excuse, they just choose not to learn the song properly..

so how do u jam with people like that..?

hw do u tell them without hurting their feelings?

or wad if their head a like "stones"?

ive known a few people like them..

so any good advices?

im not expecting the harsh ones.. keep it cool.. :-D:cool:

HEy hey hey.....i use to be like tat. Well, hmmm well, for a guitarist, u can practise with him under void deck or wat?? so u can tell him e structure of the song.........so u won't be scolding him, i mean if while on the practise he can jus like follow u....and u guys can jus revise on it. den well for a vox , jus ask that guy to write the structure on a piece of paper or his hand??
hmmm if it is the drummer .......well its hard man this one. for a drummer , i believe jus ask him to write the structure on a piece of paper if he dun wan....to even do that?? kick him out....... tell him so wat if you are a good player but u can't even play a full song right structure??

okok chill.......haha. ok then bout modified, i dun think it is a bad thing, sometimes its good to modified.....sometimes, if i play a song by ear, i tend to modified it or maybe simplify it.....but dun worry unless it sounds the same...who cares?? i mean its better to play diff from the cd track so its like ur style of playing.......

PEACE NO WAR!!!
am i helping or i didn't ans u at all?? sorry if i didn't

haha... thats a good question. for me, im into music but im sucky in instruments. im more of the sound engineering side of music. i listen to a broad range of music. From avant-garde, ragtime, movie, games and tv soundtracks to ur newer english, chinese, jap pop. usually when i tok to these ppl, from questions i ask, i will noe if that person is into music or not. Its real simple. if someone says he or she loves jazz music, u ask him or her, which jazz musician do you listen to. if he or she says kenny g, i would shut up and walk away, because this shows how shallow he or she knows about jazz. for rock, if he says something like linkin park etc, that the same thing. to me, if u are into music, you would love anything that is good. if u say jay chou songs are good, i want to noe why. Because he sings well? his melodies are good? he gets really good arranger to arrange his songs? and not because he looks handsome because thats not answering to the question. im asking you why do u tink jay chou songs are good and u tell me because he looks handsome? if u tell me you love metal, i wan to noe that you love it because of the killer guitar soloes, the weird time signature, how they made the song sound so heavy and not because oh, coz metal rocks! it makes my head bang.
and also, if someone says i really love drumming, the least they need to noe is dave weckl, guitarist they need to noe paul gilbert, steve vai, tommy emmanuel, b.b. king, SRV. If not it juz makes them look like such a loser.
same goes for keyboardist, they need to noe hiromi, billy preston etc.
and bassist, john patitucci, billy sheehan, m2, stanley clarke, victor wooten etc.
and if u love chinese pop, dun tell me you dunno who is zhang yu sheng, li zhong sheng. if you love japanese stuff, you need to noe x japan, utada, cassiopeia's stuff.

and lastly, if u really love music, please please tell me u noe mj and beatles.

i hope tat answers your questions. and hopefully some insights for some of our softies here.

different ppl have diff reasons, reasons will change over time, time will change reason and there may be no reason in the first place.

I rather disagree with what you've said here actually. Yes, the technical aspects of music are important, but majority of the audience relate to music on a "feel" factor. Rock music isn't just about the technicalities of the killer solos or the 3/8 time signature; it's also about the feeling of electricity in your veins, fire in your soul. I think someone who can appreciate music on that level is good enough to be considered a "music" fan.

Music isn't an exclusive club. Every musician wants his or her music to be shared and enjoyed by everyone who can enjoy it. Putting a qualification on music in this manner simply marks you as a music snob who's way too caught up with thoughts and pretenses of legitimacy and superiority, and fails to discover the true simple beauty of music.

A 5-year old child who listens to the music of a rock band and dances to them knows nothing of scales, time signatures, chord progressions or complex arrangements. The child dances simply because the music connects with him on a very basic level, and he finds pleasure in it. Would you say that this child loves music any less than a man who has dedicated his life to musical theory?

We need to have the feel for it. :) +1
If you don't like it, just say it. Be a critic, its fine.
Even footsteps can be music to their ears. With that beat to it. Woah. Marvellous!

yea.
some bandmate i came across they are very good,
but once status change to 'in a relationship'.
they tend to neglect the band, eg like learning songs, band meeting and stuff.
but if u speak out to them, they changed to their normal self! :D

Your perception is pretty shallow. And i frown pretty badly at what you perceived.

Sadly I thought Lou5y was going to bring forth a good explanation. But to judge people's love by them knowing the names of good musicians, is retardedly shallow. I mean, that's not even possible to judge! People can memorise names! But can they connect to the music that these musicians create, is the bottom line.

It dosen't really matter if you can or cannot remember the names of bands. Personally, the real difference between a keen person and a person with indifference would be the small efforts that he tries to contribute to his/her band by trying to learn a song that's hard to play for him/her.

And also the commitment level that most bands have trouble with.

Sort of my 2 cents worth.

How to know if a person is into music?

A person who is into music will usually play an instrument they like and is very interested in the instrument and they are really care about music.

AS A VET IN THE SCENE - i CAN TELL YOU THAT PPL WHO SOMETIMES JUST WANA BE IN THE BAND - CAN ALSO BRING SOMETHING TO THE TABLE ..IN OTHER ASPECTS

and lastly, if u really love music, please please tell me u noe mj and beatles.

Rubbish. Your shallow perception is nothing short of appalling. Love of music is not all about knowing musicians and being able to regurgitate their discographies.

I don't happen to see the name of even one of the great musicians/composers who shaped western music. Where's Bach, where is Paganini, where is Stravinsky, where is Vivaldi?

ps: I don't like and can't stand people who ask me "why don't I like MJ/The beatles", I'll usually respond with "oh yea, why don't you like Paganini/Bach/Metal?"

I agree man. There's a guy whom I know who don't play instruments. And he wants to be in band and he force himself go learn electric bass... Poser.

drummers do not need to know john bonham? guitarist do not need to know jimmy page? If you listen to a wide range of music, it means that you are very accepting to some music which are not music. AND music is a form of art and art has got no restrictions and right or wrong. Like if I play guitar and to be someone who is a master in shredding, must I play some shred master song to be called a master in shredding? It's really infuriating that people always use "need" in music and say that I need to learn sweet child o mine solo to be able to be in their band when they use sweet child o mine as a standard to judge people's standard.

I think you can be a utterly lousy player and still love music. You dont need to know how to cook chicken rice to like to eat chicken rice.

Infact, if you dont play any instruments, you will be able to appreciate music better than musicians. For most of us, we have lost the ability to appreciate simple pop music, or the over-played stuff like smells like teen spirit or even sweet child of mind. How many of us can listen to a britney spears song and say 'wow!' ?

As we become musicians, we develop some form of bias for certain types of music.
Guitarists, in general, tend to focus on the guitar parts of the song when they listen to a piece. I wouldnt call that liking music. Compared to someone who listens to radio regularly or someone who goes 'wow' at every Rihana song, i would say that the typical guitarist is not as much "into music".

IMO, to fully like and enjoy music, you need to detach the 'musician's mindset'

and the worst thing one can do to justify that he likes music is to spend HUGE sums of money on their musical instruments.

and the part on playing music to impress people. That is NORMAL, we are human, we all need some form of positive self-regard for ourselves at some point in time. And well. of course there are people who overdo it.
