what makes u interested in guitar in the first place if it isnt because of music?

thats weird man...

dont tell me u just learn guitar just for fun..? i mean if u want to be GOOD.. u really do have to research alot, learn and improve to be good right?

u will try to study the guitar part to be perfect at possible right?

if no, then i dont know hw u would be "good".

if no, then i really dont know what to say man.....

and they still have the same problems..

and they keep depending on me teaching them..

i mean, i couldnt be spoon fedding them everytime right..?

wheres their initiative?

peace...

Look now, children, dont get petty over this small issues. I know serious musicians gets frustrated by people who Bluff them. But those hobbyists will get tensed up if you expose them here. Leave it to fate. Be lucky and get the right bandmates la. What else can we do?

I know you're not supposed to judge a book by it's cover and stuff, but sometimes its the easiest way to find out if he/she's realli into music. Oh and i'm not talking about the guys at bugis who dress up in 5 layers of jackets, scarves and striped socks. Those are the obvious ones. No points for figuring them out.

Stuff like

- Hairstyle (Gatsby inspired vs mr kiasu inspired)
- English speaking ability (two malay guys talking to each other in english is a clear sign that one of them likes radiohead)
- Vintage t-shirts
- Glasses (Ala elvis costello)
- Has a girlfriend that is not of the same race as the guy
- usually skinny in appearance (or is in denial that he is)
- still uses public transportation (cos he spent all his money on a korg/fender/pearl)

I can go on forever, but i'm guessing you get the idea...

That's pretty much stereotyping.

To Evodia, I think the best thing to do is just to kick him out and get a new one.

It may seems a cruel thing to do, but heck, maybe that's not the genre he fits best and he in fact, maybe struggling to play it.

I say so as I for several occasions got kicked out which I felt it's nothing wrong. I understand that I don't have strong background on types of music and as such, I tend to struggle a lot, especially on doing other band's originals. It is to me in fact, doing me a favor as I now know my limitations and work on other things (of course, the kicked out party need to be an optimistic person)

Or a less-cruel way like;

"I think your strength does not lie in this kind of music, I feel that you are struggling, maybe you should try something else? <Recommend a genre he may be good at>"
. Something like that, which I never heard before..lol

If I'm recruiting fellow musicians, my intention are just simple;

1.) He/she needs to be able to hang out like normal friends, I mean if the 'audition' fails, at least the bonding is there and maybe future discussions can be brought up again, you never know.

2.) Humble. Humble people :)

Perhaps it’s a digression; but please insert the word “currently” between the words “is” and “into” (into the original question/query above) and it should make it easier (and/or much more brutal) for “everybody”.

How to know if that person is currently into music?

This “apek” don’t have the answers; but is suggesting that one should firstly also ask him/herself the following questions: -

1. Would I still own and (still) play a “musical instrument” and/or “sing” 10 years from now?

2. Would I still own and (still) play a “musical instrument” and/or “sing” 20 years from now?

3. Would I still own and (still) play a “musical instrument” and/or “sing” 30 years from now?

4. Would I still own and (still) play a “musical instrument” and/or “sing ….. …. … .. . after I am married, have children, … .. . eerrr … .. . being called a grandpa/ma . .. … …. ….. ??

5. Would there come a time when I have to consider and/or think about “… .. . who’s worthy of inheriting my treasured collection of musical instruments; … .. ???

These are all fashion or just fads and have nothing to do with music. These stereotypes might actually be inspired indirectly by music (ie. watching MTV or reading NME) but even if that's true I'll hardly call people wearing vintage tshirts and dating interracially "into music". Human beings are a bunch of easily-influenced and gullible souls, case in point being teenagers.

I think the best way to find out if someone is "into music" is to talk to them. Like, actually talking to them. Over a cup of coffee, a bottle of stout, or just plain-serious chatting.

I feel q4u2die4 made a very valid and solid point.

If you ask someone whether he/she will still be in music, say 20 or 10 years from now, provided he/she is not in drunk/joking or plain childish mood.

And the answer is "no" straight away, you can know he/she not serious.

That is too direct. So don't admire people with expensive gears etc. Some are just rich kids.

You know, there are people who are very talented in the art of music, but don't see themselves devoting to any instrument. I know of people like that.

Yet another shallow view. An unrealistically shallow judge.

Sobir: Wth? What kind of explanation is that? -_- << Lookie! I typed that face. I probably listen to Jay Chou. Correct? Correct?

If you noticed stuff going on between bandmates, you can always do the obvious, communicate. Its a mutual kinda thing.
So far thats what we do in our band. I have to say, it wasnt smooth in the beginning but it gets better after.

I know the greatest pair is John Lennon and Yoko Ono but then Yoko Ono's music taste isn't digestible i still prefer her Artistic concept more then her music concept. man why MJ and why Beatles? to me beatles is only a boy band of the 60s and 70s who happen to play instruments. I prefer them just before they are going solo and going solo cz that's when their song really shine.... Ringo and George and Lennon is my fav... Paul have a beautiful voice. MJ? the only thing i like MJ was when he is Jackson 5 and still black... after white only the Black or white era but can't denial he is good

You see the point is being a music lover doesn't mean you've to play an instrument, sing like them, move like them or dress like them... it means being able to accept music of all range be it good or bad. To be, no music are bad music as the process that the music/song are make is not simple and they are all fruits of passion and inspiration...

Damn what's the point of this thread anyway?

The TS is asking abt how does he/she tell whether his/her bandmate are still into the band or still interested to be in her/his band... haiz the title muz be mis-leading.
