How to know if that person is into music

i think everyone, on some level, is already into music. music is an art, and it's more than just a series of tonal frequencies arranged in a certain order. insofar, i have never met someone who totally abhors listening to music (not certain genres, but music in general). everyone has their own preferences. for me i listen to almost everything (except metal - i've yet to learn to appreciate it but i can still feel it and headbang to it just that i'm not so into it...yet). i listen to various stuff ranging from latin, to rock, to pop, to funk (james brown!), to afro-cuban, to lounge, to alternative..you name it. and i feel there's no such thing as bad music, only bad artists. the aim of the artist is to take a certain idea and try to help the listener share the same concept. some artists just bring across their ideas badly. nothing some practice can't help.

in a band it's music harder because it's not just you but a few people working as a group. think of it this way, i'll draw a comparison to art. playing in a band is like having 5 painters paint a single picture. if each of the 5 painters has a different concept of a artwork, or have technical limitations or just don't care how it turns out - the painting will ultimately not result in something that's good (unless the concept of the piece is to have different concepts, but that's another thing). so the band has to work together, and bring out the song together. working as one. that's why communication is vital in performance. that's what seperates the pros from amateurs. notice how pros play. they already have the skill. and when they get on stage, all they worry about is how to connect with the crowd, because they already know each other inside out.

anyway to comment on l0u5y's post earlier on, i wouldn't say it's shallow. sometimes the more you know the harder it is to see the simpler side of things - it's common. on some level i agree with him but i always bring myself back down from the elitist mindset. music is about emotion. when you sing the words "i love you", mean it; tell it to someone. don't just sing the words and the melody. when you play a guitar solo, speak with your guitar. listen to some b.b. king. the way he plays the guitar is as if it's him talking through his guitar, it's amazing. likewise any other instrument. music is a language (literally, not metaphorically).

and above all, be humble. you're not that amazing..:D
