How to bring back guitars from overseas on flight

well, i guess another thing to note is to make sure the total weight of your baggage do not exceed. or else you'll have to pay extra charges :x and i totally agree that the "fragile" sticker is useless!

you don't need to check with the government. I can assure you it does not exist. it's called corruption :P

That is precisely why I am asking for the time and date, the Peking central government is taking a pretty tough stance on corruption right now, nailing those people might not be an impossibility.

If you checked in your guitar and would like to know how much damage the people did to it during check in, you can actually buy this type of sticker and stick it to your case.

77

It would record the amount of G forces that your guitar sustained during check in

anyone ever contemplated dismantling your guitar and re-assembling it (assuming it's not a through body)

yeh i did before. mentioned in the earlier post. i took of the neck to shorten the length. and stuff some tshirts to pad it more.

I checked in my Strat (with a hard case, of course) when I flew back from Melbourne. I was not allowed to carry it on board, simply due to the shape of it (not being able to fit into the overhead cabins, or the coat wardrobes), and also due to safety reasons (I might be a guitar wielding terrorist. nothing more deadly than that).

also, if you do check your luggage in, ask to see if there's a cage for you to put your guitar in it before you go away from the check in counter. most oddly shaped items like golf clubs, guitars, tennis rackets and the like get placed into such cages and are then brought into the cargo hold in the cage itself.

I hand carried my Ibanez RG from America transiting Minneapolis and Narita Japan back to Singapore. It went into the clothes hangar compartment for 13 hours and overhead for 7 hours. Nothing bad happened to it. Altho the gig bag touch a wee bit of Minneapolis snow. haha.

i've travelled on budget before, and its a no go for carry-on. get a hardcase and check it in please. u can also ask to carry it personally to the aerobridge during departure, and pray the handlers on arrival will treat it nicely.

So, its confirmed huh bro? No-go for budget airlines eh? :(

hang on guys... what's it with the govt? i thought it's the airline that's corrupted... i called the china eastern airline, described the size of my guitar and they told me i need to purchase this ticket for a standing "seat" on the plane since it's gonna take up a space of a human if i dun wanna check it in... and it's like almost the same price as my ticket. i totally freaked out when i heard tt. my guitar only costed RMB 3500 and i need to spend another 7000 to bring it back safely... wth. but anyway, my plane was on the 31st Dec 2008, 10am. MU567. departing from Shanghai Pudong airport.
