HOT TOPIC: SHOULD U BE PAID!?

DarknessFury: when an agent pays a band, a certain standard is being observed. if they failed to play to the expected standard, there goes their other gigs. as in for starting out bands, should u even gig in the first placE? i shall express my views in the later part.

geraldkoh: u are talking about hobbist. u try asking a professional and see if they will gig long run for free? all musicians luv to hav audience support and it is indeed a wonderful feeling to be on stage. but once again, if u are starting out, would u wan to gig ? will the audience be happy? or feeling crappy? and i agree with u, everything starts from love of music. but i still think a min sum of money should be given as a token of respect or a thank you for their service or help.

Darren: musicians so little? 10 years ago i was hearing those 7th month people to be earning near 800 bucks a night. now is perhaps 300-500. and some of these guys r pro full timers. and i hav no idea how much r others usually paid, but a wedding usually fetches about min 250 for 2 sets. u are right about the festive season part. it is indeed a bonus for us. i hate to have people spoiling the market. some how, money does motivate standard in some way. and 400 for a set is very very normal for a band liao. at least they pay u. if those young bands tink is too little? blame it on people like gerald who plays for free. :o

wraith: hi there. u agreed that sellers should be more considerate? lol. if yes then thanks. u are right. in a certain sense, ignoring full timers, playing music is not for money. but u be at the very least, be given a certain amount to keep u going right? and how many talented souls out there give up playing full time if the market was developed? i don't really wish to talk about tickets, it was just an example of people exploiting musicians. when one gig, he definitely enjoy. but is the audience enjoying? u can argue that sum things got to be learnt on stage blar blar. but don't u tink u got to be of certain standard to be able to stand on the stage? chinese has this saying of 1 min on the stage 10 years of hardwork. seems like nowadays people can just go to stage n clown just like singapore idol blar blar. music is only music if u could expressed it the right way. hope u get my point.

wyldeboon: precisely. many pro musicians don't play for free. but i shall ignore the pro musicians for now. how about semi pro? i often link money with eqiupments. if they can't even afford to pay u, would they even provide good equipments? would it realli entertain the crowd with your 10w amp? i am just trying to say, if a person ask u for a gig, try not to do it for free. get alittle transport is better than noting. 3 mid night cab fare is not cheap.

DoubleBlade: 400 for 4 piece? wa.. nowadays rates so gd. i too get such rates for 1 set. i realli didn't know the market pays so well. forgive me. if we pay the bands, there is a subconcious standard that we expect. not any tom dick or harry can go up the stage. not any people deserve to be paid. so u too believe one shouldn't spoil the market?

3notesAbar: yea! u r very passionate! r u one tat gig for freE? u even pay indirectly to gig?

thailoverboy: u r right. but the amount is sum how affected by our dear 3 notes who gigs for free. ignoring the standard level.

Ec-Rose: u don't feel exploited? many singers luvs singing. they sing for free? ignoring pros i stress again, i am not asking a huge chunk of pay. a minimum sum of token to grab a meal or take a cab is good enough. it keeps all of us going. it is not sumting to be dispise of.

i'm only doing it for the chicks.

that's good to know. haha. :P

drumnoob: i'm sure even pros will not mind gigging for free for 2 or 3 sets for one or two nights IMO. anymore than that, then it's definitely courtesy to pay for their services.

thailboy: hmm all i can say is for my level, min 80 for a set and 250 for a night. i know of top paying bands that got $******.

gerald: not many pros r willing. they got family to feed. they spent their life, their money on music and u hope to listen to them for free? i realli doubt any pros r willing to do it. maybe there r. i don't know.

oh ya. many pro musicians just jammed on the spot too. don't wish to mention. but when u pay peanuts, u get monkeys.

thail: it is noting compared to others. i am still learning as well.

and y giv tat attitude of u win u win? i am just trying to giv my views and comments. u not comfortable with that? i too gave u a reason for my view if i am not wrong.

MARKET RATE: $100 minimum per person for 3 sets of 45 for club relief gigs

Many musos UNDERCUT and even play for $60-$80 spoil market. Of course its up to them if they really wanna cari makan but in the long run it encourages club owners to start paying less & less...

Functions $200-$300 depending on season. e.g Christmas eve I pay my guys 3 times as much & New years eve up to 4 times as much...

wanna blame also hard coz they cari makan n need the bread

Im glad I kept my day job all these years and just played when I could....

Dat way if Im not happy with club I can tell them to EFF off and still have day job AND vice versa.... (especially vice versa ... giggin while looking for a new job)

well, what you said is true and the thing is we're talking about pros here, so they make $x for every gig they play. and i assume what you actually are talking about are musicians who are not beginners and not pros and whether they ought to be paid. well, this is where the desire to be paid comes in. like fgl, he has a full-time job, its whether he wants to be paid or not i guess.
