well, you can try buying second hand guitars, quite a number of great deals on soft. maybe an epiphone SG will be well suited for you.i can tell you where to get one cheaper or you can find on soft. other alternatives can be like you said earlier one LTD, a decent made LTD will knock your hats of before you know it.

Most of us guitarist also started off in you situation too where we dont have that big a budget too..haha...

well first of all you should know that there isn't a specific type of guitar that can play only a specific genre, though some guitars are more inclined to a certain genre.
a telecaster would be a good choice for playing country music but that doesn't mean that it's lousy for playing metal.

also, there are a few things that metalheads look out for when choosing a guitar.

the first would be the bridge. it would be advisable to choose a guitar with a floating bridge to ensure that the guitar doesn't go offtune.

the next would be pickups.

I think... it might not be accurate to say that high output pups don't mean better high gain performance.

They actually do help but a metalhead should not disqualify lower output pickups just because they are "weaker".

You're right that lower output pickups can handle high gain better - better clarity, "sweeter" tone, less harshness, more natural feel, etc. More "controlled" as you say.

On the other hand, with higher output stuff - you get compression so suddenly legato feels easier to do. Suddenly pinch harmonics are a breeze. Suddenly picking becomes more effortless. The tone is crushing, saturated and just screams.

Looking at what I just said - either attributes can come off the wrong way too. Double edged sword.

it really depends on what you want.

anyway, all that i've said is actually kinda like a summary of http://soft.com.sg/forum/gear-guitar/88549-amateurs-gear-guide-metal.html#post764981

a very good read. read it and hopefully, it'd help you make your choice

Hi bigblackbear, err... an already confusing thread, I think you may have taken the bridge part out of context here... anyway.. good that you've included the link for cross referencing.

To TS, if you can live with not feeling inadequate for using a not so famous brands, there are guitars that can do the job you want. I saw once the second guitarist (sessionist maybe) for the band 'RAVEN' playing live with SX pirate.

Try finding out a bit more about wood type, pickups and pedals combination along with EQ settings and you may be surprised with what you can learn and achieve with $750.

A good advice is go to a guitar shop look for a cool guitar that u want to use on stage, try it if you like it see the price tag if you can afford it then buy it if not repeat the process again or go to another guitar shop and repeat the process again. The thing is you must like the sound don't care about what other ppl think it's your guitar it's your sound

you do know that money doesn't come that easily these days right..

ya that's why I said

reason is some people look at the price tag 1st b4 they try it and some ppl have this concept, the higher the price the better the sound, I feel it's kind of a psychological thing, so that's why try 1st b4 u look at the price. For eg. My guitar is about $1000++ and the JEM 7V is about $4000++ however I hate the soud of the JEM 7V and I love the sound of my guitar.

Hey HiFi, you should try calling Sound Alchemy, I was just there a few days ago, they're selling the X30 for $599! You'll still have spare change for a couple of pedals!

Haha. I think by now he knows that the bands he named are metalcore bands and not death metal bands. Time to introduce him to some really extreme stuff. Death metal: Cannibal Corpse, Malevolent Creation, Morbid Angel, Zyklon...

Hmm, I'm surprised no rabid attack here, given that the last people you ever want to call 'core' are the death/black metal guys.

LOL. There's no such guitar called a metal guitar. -.-

Yes there is... James Trussart makes them...

Dude... WTF is Metalcore??? Metal is metal lah...

I'm beginning to like Kamelot...

i'd caution against the belief that a certain brand name is more favourable for a certain music genre because this bloke here (Morgan Harkansson of MARDUK) straps a Strat to make his black metal intentions clear...

it's not the name, really. it's what works for you.

For all the grammatical errors, genre confusion and all the OT/"sincere" replies, this is by far one of the most amusing thread I've read in 2009...

dude, you are right, but some guitars are specially designed for metal player,

alright, u have a point here. some guitars have included features that helps in playing metal, which most people consider as:

fast riffs through the fretboard which needs smooth necks - satin, unfinished necks
playing on higher notes - 24 fret guitars.
accessibility in playing high notes - deep double cutaway
need more chugg in the distortion, easy harmonics - high output pickups
looks fierce - sharp pointy edges

just some, and depends on taste. these features helps in playing metal.
