Help needed on pedal choices.

Hi,

Been using multi-effects since i started guitar a couple of years back and i've decided to make the switch to individual pedals. Being a minimalist, im fixed on getting as few pedals as possible, mainly a Distortion, Overdrive, Delay, Compressor and a Noise Gate.

Need all the advice i can get on the setup as well as what are good pedals to get. Im currently into progressive music (eg. Dream Theater) and im hoping to get a very crisp and full metal sound :)

Currently using an Ibanez RG1527. Hoping to get all my pedals second hand as im jus starting this and might want to change in the near future.

Looking forward to any help i can get here, cheers!

I play the same kind of music and that is the same guitar I once had... A sad moment when I had to let it go but oh well... Times were bad then..

We guitarists now are totally spoiled for choice with pedals nowadays. What kinda budget do you have for these pedals you planning to get?? This will definitely help with what to suggest to you.

I'd never let go of my guitar, never! haha, as with my budget, im hoping to get individual pedals around the avg price of $100 give or take... (all being second hand). This lets me to start with a decent setup allowing me to slowly upgrade and change pedals in the future (which i heard is inevitable :P ). :D

delay i suggest you can get ibanez de-7 which is usually sold here for about $80 and $100. distortion you can get the beez modded ds-1 at about the same price as the delay. i suggest you use your amp's overdrive instead of buying an overdrive.

If your budget is within the $100 per pedal then this what I recommend:

Distortion : Biyang Metal End King. Super tweakable distortion which you can definitely find a sweet spot that you will like.
Overdrive : Danelectro Transparent Overdrive V1. They say that this is a Timmy clone but hey for a $30ish pedal. This thing rocks like hell. Just that the first version is abit hard to find nowadays.
Delay : Biyang Analog Delay. A very sweet delay. Does not color your main tone.
Compressor : DOD Milkbox. Another hard to find pedal.
Noise Gate : Beta Aivin Noise Gate. Cheap, good and works well. However I must say that the Metal End King and Transparent Overdrive are very quiet pedals so getting a noise gate is not really necessary.

Just my 2 cents...

For od/Dist u can try a Jekyll and hyde from visual sound. it has both od and dist so u can save on that (about 140 used?)

the biyang analog delay or their new baby boom series is not bad. if u want more functions then u can try the de-7 (price shdnt exceed 100)

i dont know much about noise gate so i cant recommend but i dont think you'll need one cos you're not stacking 2 distortions or sth like that.

compressor wise u can get a boss comp (the sound sucks but u can mod it and it'll sound so much better)

Thanks for the replies everyone, finally getting some direction!:D

what amp are you using?

Its a pretty small and old amp, so its definally NOT going to be adding to the sound haha :P

i already own a BOSS SD-2 and my amp has overdrive, so im gonna stick to that for now haha, is the modded ds-1 any good? I know Beez does an awesome job with guitars, but just wondering if its 'heavy enough'. :)

wow, this is awesome, helps so better with specific models to look out for, gonna start checking up on those, cheers! :D

I like the fact that the OD and Distortion are a 2 in 1! that saves me up a pedal space! :) Been hearing quite abit on the DE-7 too, hopefully it goes for a good price, thanks!

AMT SS 20, 3 in 1, clean sound, overdrive, and distortion. That pedal got 1 tube inside

wow, just heard some of the sound demos and they were really good, but it looks very very pricey :P how much would one cost me if i got it second hand? and is it hard to find here?

the AMT is about USD 350 (excluding shipping) new i think, adds up to more than 600 if u count shipping. way off your budget.

may i ask what genre you play btw? cos the ppl that are recommending are either assuming what genre you play or suggesting according to what suits them (thats what i was doing haha)
the suggestions would be more useful if u include more info like genre..

I read his first post and gave suggestions accordingly...

ok, blackwood guitar quote me $620 for that pedal, ebanex music at katong there quote me $495. They say the pedal will be brought into singapore in end of June or July. The thing I like about that pedal is it has overdrive and distortion and when u change chanel u just step on 1 button it change for u if you buy 2 seperate pedals u need to step to on the other pedal and step to off the other pedal, or get a line selector which boss has and it's about $100+. So the SS 20 is like a 3 in 1 pedal with a tube sound, I guess for $495 is really good price if the tone is good for my ears. (I haven't try it out so can't comment on the tone)
By the way I'm also searching for metal distortion pedal so maybe we can go shopping together hehe. I'ved tried wampler pinnacle it's nice for rhythm, ibanez tube king is nice for lead. Wampler has the triple wreck pedal too, I would like to try that 1 day, online sounds nice yea but need to try using your own guitar and if your own amp better still.

Yeah, that pedal seems to achieve the kind of sound i am looking for, but for $495, thats quite above my budget... still considering but will try others in the meantime to see if i can get a somewhat similiar sound for less :P

I'm guessing those pedals you quoted are first hand right? If so, ill probably see if anyone is selling it for cheaper (fingers crossed).
Im still short of a good amp, short in both money and space atm haha... but ill leave that problem for another time!

Thanks for the quotes buddy! :)

ohh for amp the NuX 15 watt amp is good. it's about $167 if I remember correctly. Yea those stuff I quote is 1st hand the thing is I haven't come accross anyone selling 2nd hand AMT SS 20 on soft.com.sg probably it's good that's why no one wants to sell it lol. by the way what is your budget for the each of the pedals u are looking for and the amp?

for $495, you can get a goose 7theaven and a TS style OD to make it even more saturated and still have some money left...

Haha very true though.. and with regards to the budget, i dont really know how much most pedals are atm, but i want to spend as little as possible since this is my first time and i do not want to be paying too much for something i may not like later on.. so with reference with my other friends who buy single pedals too.. im hoping to spend anywhere from $20 to $120 on each pedal (second hand)... but am willing to go above that if its really worth the money :)

For the amp, i did see quite in the range of $150 to $220... so till i make space at my place and find one that i really like, theres no rush in getting one at the moment :)

Yeah i did hear about the 7thheaven.. how much is it going for now? Friends did tell me not to be too optimistic in finding one second hand tho haha... :P
