help me choose a drum set! :)

gnoz:
Roland V-Drum mesh-head triggers resemble authentic acoustic drums in both appearance and feel. The striking surface is a two-layer taut woven mesh of fibers fitted with several electronic sensors. This allows the mesh-head trigger to respond to the play of a drumstick in a manner that feels more like real drums than their earlier rubber predecessors. Roland developers have stated that the design of the mesh-head V-drum was inspired in part by a small toy trampoline.

For me, I find it quite easy to revert to either the acoustic or the electronic kit even if I had been playing either one for a long time. The rebound would be the only difference.

Personally, I would say not much maintenance is needed. Of course the necessary cleaning of the various drum parts is imperative. I usually clean the pads at the end of the week. I cover it with a huge cloth as well when it's not in use.

I haven't yet tried double pedals with the TD-3KW yet, but sure you can use double pedals on a single V-kickpad.

No worries about the questions, it's always good to learn new things. We all have to start somewhere. But with a wide source of information at the click of a mouse, it would do you much good to read up and understand first, and widen your knowledge at the same time. But of course, we here on Soft strive to assist each other in any way possible! :)

All the best,
jeepers

Wow thanks a lot!
Originally I thought that it is possible to use acoustic pedals on electronic V-pads...I guess not :p

That clears up many doubts!! Thanks so much! :D :D
Hope I can get my first kit soon!!

It is very much possible to use acoustic pedals on the V-kickpads. And I think I misinterpreted what you said when you asked whether can change the single pedal to a double pedal.

If you get the TD-3KW, there's a standard single kick pedal that comes with it.

Oh sorry, guess my question wasn't clear enough:???:
So the pedal comes with TD-3KW.

I'm currently overseas now and TD-3KW is selling for S$1400. I saw somewhere that it's S$2000 in SG. If that's true, it will still be cheaper if I buy it here and send it back lol. Only problem is warranty.

I'll think about it :)

When I purchased the TD-3KW, a single pedal was included in the package.

S$1400 for the TD-3KW is a steal, yo!

I think it retails in Swee Lee for roughly $2300-2400.

So far I've not had any problems with the kit and I think it's close to a year old. Can't remember how long the warranty is when you buy it here but I reckon it's not more than 2 years.

My Personal Opinion is that if Circumstances Permit, for A Learning Drummer to practice. An Acoustic Kit is definetely a much better choice than an electronic kit.

Yes, it's the touch, the rebound here when we are doing Strokes. Also the Hi-hats will have a slightly different feel I think (from what I heard from a friend).

But of course, If we do not have a choice to practice on an Acoustic Kit, then having an Electronic Kit is better than not having a Kit at all......

But then again, here we also have anothet choice to also buy a Practice Kit instead (Cheaper) - I know our Bro Alfe has a very nice & Beautiful DW Practice Kit at Music Lab.

Cheers, just an opinion.

Sori for the late reply...been bz with sch stuff....
aniwaes, I live in HDB and i heck care abt my neighbours....juz play lor...but nid to play at a certain time...ard 3pm would b great....
so far, oni had 1 complaint...bt at times, had itchy hand to play at 11am, bt cannot...need to b considerate  ....

Pearl is pretty good drumset i have to say...tho i love TAMA alot....:p
buying a kit wth everything included is great as it will save u loads of money,

However, u have to make your own research about the products included in the package....for example, make a research abt the cymbal stands, issit single braced or double braced and so on...

Even more, try to make a research abt the product u wanna buy....abt the shells, wads the hardware given....Take your time...no hurry abt havin a drumsets....

Hi zack,
wondering if you live in hdb or landed? how you manage to keep the sound level down? or you just don care?

Sound level is still the biggest pblm in Singapore housing lol.

And there're so many different elements in a drum set such as heads, lugs, skins, shells etc etc so if i want to buy acoustic, super difficult to choose for a beginner like me...or just buy those kit that comes with everything? Personally I like tama and pearl. maybe should buy the cheapest kit from pearl lol.

Hi Eric,
Thanks for the comment!
It's totally true that acoustic is better for practicing, especially for a super duper beginner like me
I'm thinking of going to a school to learn, but use electronic for practicing at home. In this way, i might be able to transfer what i practice to an acoustic kit when i go for the course. Or maybe I might confuse things up instead haha...

If i buy a practice kit, won't the sound level still be a problem?

@zack11
Thanks for the info. I guess tonnes and tonnes of research needs to be done before I buy an acoustic (if i'm getting one). I'll be sure to read up more and experience more  Looking forward to that day..which might not be that far away after all...

Hey gnohz,

the DW practice kit Eric is referring to is this:

PADTS5.jpg

It'd be as loud as playing on an electronic kit.

Oops..how embarrassing
Thanks for the clear up :)
Oh by the way, I read in the roland pamphlet that you need to connect an amplifier to the electronic kit in order to be able to hear what you're playing without headphones, but is it possible to attach computer speakers instead?

better to have bigger speakers cause of the low frequencies from the bass drums.....a hard "Dud" on your bass drum may blow your computer speakers..hehe

But seriously..if your computer speaker is big enough, it is ok...as long as you
don't blast.....

Jeepers, jester,

I finally had a chance to try out the Roland TD3 at a music shop yesterday.
Like what everyone said, the feel is definitely different, especially the toms. I think the main reason is the rebound. For the rubber toms, the surface it a little bit harder and I think you need to hit harder before there's rebound. Since I've been practising on acoustic for a month, the rubber toms felt a bit wierd at first. I guess it'll be ok once I get used to it.

Another thing is that the pads and cymbals are not triggered by the position at where you hit, but mostly only by the force, so even if you hit different places on the cymbal or tom, the same sound (but different velocity) will be produced.

The mesh head snare is very, very close to the real thing. It will feel even more real if you tighten the head more.

I wonder if this will affect the style of playing when someone switch to a-drum next time cos of the toms hmmm....The main problem might be that you need to adjust the force you hit the toms.

But of cos it's better than nothing. It's very good for practice though, all the fills and rudiments.

I asked for the price together with a Tama 200TW double pedal and Tama throne and it's $1600!!! Add shipping costs and it'll be around $1800.

I'm in the midst of trying to convince myself before I take the plunge :mrgreen:

Yup, the triggering part was an issue for me. But you'll get used to it over time. Also with the e-kit, you'll have to sacrifice cross-sticking, which I like to use quite a bit.

But without a shadow of a doubt, e-kits are definitely very good for home use.

Nice prices there Gnohz, I'd get it if I were you, lol.

Yeah, think i'll get used to it very soon. Cross-sticking, you can't do that? I thought that if rim-shots are possible, then cross-sticking shouldnt be a problem...

There were Yamaha's sets there too. I tried them and it's definitely a no-no
It's as if I'm paying $1000++ for 6, 7 pieces of rubber  but Yamaha's sounds are not that bad too, only that the feel of the rubber is rather soft, whereas Roland's rubber pads are a little hard haha lol...

Oh my...i'm going to get it soon...real soon

You can? I don't think so, or at least I haven't been able to do just yet.

I prefer Yamaha's sounds, actually. Tried the DTXtreme IV Special at Yamaha the other day, foooooooyo it's freaking good. And you can tune each pad (Snare and toms) to your liking. Pitch changes as you tighten and loosen; tighten = higher, loosen = lower. Very nice.

I currently own a roland hd-1. Cross sticking is possible, just that the sound is not very evident when it comes out through the amp. I recorded the sound through my PC through a normal audio cable and it picks up the cross-stick sound. So I should think the TD-3 is capable of it too.

about speakers, has anyone successfully used PC speakers with their e-drum?

Wah you can change pitch on the toms and snare for DTXtreme IV Special?? It must be Yamaha's high-end kit, like Roland's TD-20. You can change every single parameter, from the depth of toms, the shell type, type of head, amount of muffling, amount of snare, and even the size lol
Of course the price is very amazing too
DTXtreme IV Special must be exp too O_o

Thanks irishblue for the info!

I saw somewhere that pc speakers might not be able to take the bass drum sound, but think it shldnt be a pblm if you have those 2.1 speakers.
I'm going to try to connect it to my 4.1 and see if it works...after i buy the set

maybe jeepers can help you with this.
