well, so i just registered for mdc auditions, (which are tomorrow at 10am) for the position as a drummer and the lady on the line tells me i have to prepare a solo piece and sight-read.

shit.

so any advice any of u guys able to give me? ideas for the solo piece? how hard the sight-reading is gonna be? (im self taught.. and the number of times i've seen a drum score can be counted using my fingers)

kinda freaking out right now...

thanks guys

Bro

I think for the Solo Piece - they allow you to play anything as long as it's your own Solo...no Sight-Reading for this Area...I guess

The Sight Reading is a Music-Sheet they will give you...I really wonder are they giving you

(1) Part written on Drums alone - This one more difficult - you must play exactly, following the notes they ask you to play - same like below also - but must know where to syncopate.
or
(2) A Music Sheet with those Common-Notes other Musician there are using - You will be using the Rythmn Part for this. The Wind-Instrument Musician will have a different sets of Notes. The Bass also different sets. - - But if they give you this (it will be using Rythmn Part) - NO WORRY - it's easier - you just need to know how to read sheet music eg Start, Repeat, fill-ins, coda etc etc...not too difficult to follow - you just remember to count the structure of the song - How many bar the whole song - Intro how many bar, chorus how many bar, then repeat where - jump to fill in where - then continue till end.

I'm not a Professional Drummer - just know alittle bit here and there as a hobbyists.....

Brothers - please help him lah - - come out come out...

Cheers

thanks... im still wondering what to do for solo haha.. im not good at rudiments.. and i havent done any solos before.. :(

sorri bro but ur f**ked. the solo piece must cover, pop, rock, jazz, funk, latin.
the sight reading if ur tht unsure abt charts, ur gonna fub it when under pressure. yes maybe they'll give u a guitar chart but on tht chart there will be band accents which according to which genre u either have to punch together with the band or u have to set up the band ala big band. they might also give u a rythmn chart to play.
i was in the saf band which is attached to the mdc hq in nee soon camp and let me tell u the drummers there were freaking gd.
if u get in my hats off to u. but i'm sorry bro, maybe further down the line.

sight reading can't be trained overnight man :( i was quite fluent at it at one time but after i lost touch with sheet music sight reading drumming for few months, i've become quite poor... gotta train slowly. keep on drumming tho!

didnt wake up for em lol.. amoy quee camp is like so far away, + it rained..
guess mdc wont be able to save me from joining infantry then..
:(

the auditions were at amoy kee? werid i thouight they wld have had it in nee soon man?
ah well man. dun be a man or a sgt hahha. officer or store man's gd.

hey man,
in mdc we give everyone a chance, you shouldnt have worried whether you were good enough maybe when the next chance comes you can try out again, auditions are quite regular.
haha btw, im drumming for mdc now and trust me im not that good! actually the saf band drummers are alot more technically gifted! so dont worry about the auditions you never know unless u give it a shot.

keeping drumming!

Man...it used to be the other way around when I was there 10 yrs back....the saf band director were hungry for mdc musicians! The audition process was so hard that only 2-3 new mussos passes the audition every 2 yrs +....I remember I had to play a show on the 2nd day I was in....scary stuff....the band director then, Capt Raj was really strict with the standards then.

u think? i reckon the mdc drummers were better in my time, saf band had the killa ones like ning chow but u all had boon gee man
oh yeahhhhh

There were some politics going on during my time......trust me, SAF band was pretty sour then. There were so many killer musicians from MDC prior to your time....Tama Goh, Shah Tahir, Roy Dragon, Djasli, Vicknesh, Boon Chai, Adam Lee etc....And I'm just scraping the surface here....
