Heavy Thick Sounds

Man, you are talking about slightly different things here....

Almondx is going on about the SOUND...

But I believe, my man, you are going for the VIBE, the whole ATTITUDE thing, and less on the sound...

I think you're right... I was wondering why everyone thinks that single coils can't produce the kind of "wall-of-sound" that is required in a heavy track, that only humbuckers can give this... Didn't make sense... Because I personally have scared the shit out of some other metal guitarists in a studio with the HX-85. Heh...

But I see it now.

Simple Plan is punk? I thought Blondie was punk!?!?!?

*Shredcow dreams... pictures this... aged man... "whitestrat" tattooed on his exposed left bum... prancing around the stage... banging on his beaten strat with a HX-85 pup... amplifiers melting... sonic fires burning...*

Dood. Now that is P U N K.

It's a very simple analogy actually. Cheap good value for money guitar can sound good and close to the real deal and make people go "whoa that sounds good for a guitar in that *PRICE RANGE*" just like the HX-85 can sound heavy for a singlecoil and almost match a p90.

But at the end of the day, when you compare that cheap good value for money guitar eg. Edwards LP copy to the real '59 the same way you compare the HX-85 to a real hot humbucker like the Bareknuckles Warpig, the difference is going to be there.

I personally think you scared the shit out of some other metal guitarists in a studio with the HX-85 only because it's a singlecoil and performed surprisingly close to a p90 *for a singlecoil*. If it was a super hot humbucker instead those very same guitarists will think it's rather low output for a super hot humbucker. Therefore, it will not be in the same league as a humbucker in order to attain that wall of sound, which renders your point moot.

Similar guitars, different pickups, same amp settings - that amp used is a class A dumble so gain control depends primarily on the guitar's volume knob which is both on 10. Therefore conditions are identical. The HX-85 will be around the output of the sc245. The warpig will be around the output of the sc250. Which takes less work to sound bigger now?

My point is yes the HX-85 can sound heavy most definitely but it requires more effort than a high output humbucker which can reach the same level of heaviness with no effort and reach levels where the HX-85 can never reach. So why recommend a singlecoil when you have to go through so much trouble? Singlecoils have their own place, and humbuckers have their own place. However, heaviness is definitely not in a singlecoil's territory which is inherently about clarity and chime.
