From scratch.. is it worth the effort?
I dun think it would be cheaper rite? But if I built it I would surely love the guitar hehe...;)

I doubt that u can save any money at all. By the time u get the woods, pups, tools and other wat nots, u could have used the money spent on a nice second hand guitar.

That being said, diy to me, is about the learning experience. I have done an amp kit just for the fun of it but now the novelty has worn off.

There are lots of diy guitar sites on the web. Prehaps u can start of by buying a second hand cheapo and modding it to your liking-paint job, pups etc.Its definitely much easier and faster than carving out an archtop body from a slab of wood.

Theres a guy in canada i talk to on msn.

one of the courses at his school is guitar building :|

He gets to build a guitar and gets graded on it.

so lucky

the sinamex guy has built 1 b4...if u go to sinamex,go to the 'studio' looking room n u'll see a strat..then ask them who built it..then maybe go over to him,buy him dinner at lawry's n ask him to tell u something about luthiery...?

yep I custom built many personal axes before - also for selected friends & customers. Best to get the established companys like Warmoth, all parts, etc to do the tuffer work e.g my new workhorse strat has a warmoth neck, 22 super jumbo frets with a 12-18 in radius rosewood figureboard / mother of pearl inlay on a birdseye neck. Got a nice blueburst strat body and added fender parts & hot noiseless pups.

End result: expensive but satisfying coz u really get want you looking for... 8)

Hmmm.. I guess the main thing why ppl want to build their own axe is that, they can't get what they want from the stock models.

Problem is... do you know what you really want?

You prefer the sweeter tone of the neck pup in a 22 fret axe? Or you wanna sacrifice that or prefer a less neck-ish neck tone of a 24 fret axe? Maple fretboard? Or Ebony? Steel or nickle frets. Body wood? Top? Verneer? Neck Radius? Trem/Bridge?

I guess if you can figure out those answers with a resounding aye to what you want, then cool... otherwise the custom axe will be just another excuse to splurge in your quest for the ultimate guitar.

Hmm.. guess it's not worth it then. I was thinking if I built my own guitar I could make it really really light  Part of the reason I'm playing acoustic now is that my left shoulder aches easily. The e.guitars I like are usually rather heavy.

Reverend Guitars are chambered body, should be quite light but don think its available in singapore. there are sound samples at their web
http://www.reverendguitars.com/

Or try those semi-hollow bodies by Ibanez, easy on the pocket and think its light too. :)

it's probably not worth it to build a guitar from scratch then. Look out for hollowbodies, and other stuff overseas, less known brands, to solve your problem.

(of course, if you want a Les Paul, pretty much tough luck. the motley crue guitarist Mick Mars had back problems and eventually downgraded to Fender SSH strats with FRs.)

As in warmoth.com rite? If so, am I rite to say, they dun sell RGs body? Cos i checked before... dun have...

wonder what would happen if i tried to build a 7 string like the schecter blackjack.. but with a neck thru instead of a set neck... imagine the sustain...

it depends on a lot of factors... a neck thru alone will not guarantee you sustain.

a well built neck thru with proper specifications, assuming all other things equal, will. but everyone knows in real life, not all things are equal.
