Guitar : Punk Rock / Metal

Nope....I don't.

I thought so...

He's basically someone who's taken a generic strat with stock pickups, and has made history in the european metal scene by laying down some of the nicest solos I've ever heard, and started the whole "Metal Opera" idea in the early 90s. People like Michael Romeo, Bruce Dickinson, James La Brie, Devin Townsend have worked with him on this Ayreon projects before. Check him out!

And yes, they're single coils... not even stacked dummy coils.;)

so does that still make you wanna play like Jim Root if you play a tele? :D

LOL. that was long ago haha.

Dear zax, LadyInTears, dudelove, super_potato30, Ized:
I''m really feeling very remorseful for what I've done to this forum namely: Music kopi tiam, Guitar rookie, Gear guitar, people guitar and Howto guitar. I didn't know how people see me in their eyes. However, now I know and I am very willing to change. From now on, I will think before I post my opinions. I will try not to post any redundant threads/reply. As LadyInTears had said, he had waited "until i reached a certain level of understanding gear and guitar that i started mixing around with the various gear dudes, and finally shared my insights and opinions."
I will strive to reach to a certain level of understanding guitars and then post my opinions on this forum. Really hope you guys can Forgive me for what I did and not see me as someone as the present me when I post again the next time.

Cheers,
Teleplayer :)

sure... thanks for the heads up.

I actually used texas specials loaded in my strat to play metal at one point of time...cos i believe that its in the fingers. I find them nicer and rawer sounding compared to the tight compressed feel of humbuckers...and that breakup you get when you dig in for solos and pinch harmonics is pretty nice :)

On the flip side of the coin, needed to eq quite a bit for a better balance cos single coils tend to get flabby with too much bass.

teleplayer, i may sound harsh, im sorry. haha.
glad you understand my intentions, and its great to see you get a better understanding of stuff around here now, but your signature dunneed liddat la.. lol

I want to remind myself...

dude, just be yourself and dont be so eager to please others... just for the sake of it.

I mean, have some dignity la. No one is out to shoot you unless you really ask for it. I do however hope that you really mean it when you say that you wanna change for the better. Hope you'd put your words into action and post more constructively.

That's like walking around in public wearing a T-Shirt saying "I'm stupid".

Seriously, you don't owe anyone any promise or anything. You just need self awareness.. and a lot of reading about the things you want to contribute. Share what you know because you really know it not because you want to impress anyone or get on anyone's good side. You are basically being a hypocrite to yourself.

damn right. but some people know how to play this to their advantage, which is what i'm still trying to learn, hahah.

when listening to SRV, his bass strings sound just nice, with enough flabbiness and yet firm enough that it's nice sounding.

still wondering how to achieve that...

I like SRV's tone cos it feels kinda loose and raw sounding...probably due to heavy gauge strings and single coils. he dosent have exactly alot of gain coming from his amp.

you can actually hear the single coils break up nicely when he hits the strings really hard during solos. Especially when he does those double bends or double stops. Really nice. I guess the slight flabbiness helps since its being used in the right context- its texas blues shuffle and SRV really nails the relaxed feel with his tone and playing style.

I've also noticed that a rawer uncompressed sound will break up more easily and have a more flabby bass. Ever tried playing super high output pups? while the bass is tight, it takes much more for the pup to break up. Thats the result of too much compression- may sound nice with high gain for that chugga chugga sound but it'll lose that loose feel which is nice for low gain and sparkle for cleans. Hence its quite a compromise imo as there is no one size fits all - which is one reason why most touring musicians usually have more than one type of guitar if their style requires it.

In his case? it's the high string gauge... Higher tension... Less floppy.

Ized, I've never really experiences flabby bass on a single coil... Not if the coils are balanced properly and the heights are tuned. Care to elaborate?

hmm, ok2, thx for the explanations : ]

n to answer your questions, no, i've never used a super high pickup, or in this case, any high output pickup at all.

i feel that the stock pickup is good enough for me currently although this may change.

n yes, i was guessing that it might have something to do with his extra thick strings gauge. but i don't think i'd change my strings to that particular gauge.
