Gr3y's Vintage Modern Straat

-for this particular case, i strip until i hit the sealer coat.It was originally a natural gloss finish.A normal paint method is material>sealer>primer>colour>gloss.
-poly are tough paint but hard to work with and relatively hard to get. Closes i think is acrylic paint.
-yes i experience that b4.You might have just passed the sealer coat and unless you can find a wood sealer, i suggest you do some real good sanding job over it. Smooth surface allows the paint to be applied the best and gets the best results.

-could u enlighten me on the "material>sealer>primer>colour>gloss" part? i only understand the colour>gloss part.
-by "tough" do u mean hard to remove in future? i found some here relatively cheap.
-ok, good to know all i have to do is smoothen it.

thx a million

Shredcow: i didn't mean to diss any professional. Yes i'm just a diy-er and have absolutely no rights to bad mouth any professionals out there. Lots for me to learn and experiment.
I believe suhr started as a diy-er or learning under someone and I believe you know there ain't really courses here for such things. So, I hope you'll start to see it as a good thing rather then bad for ppl to diy. Stop picking on small details in my bad grammar, i know i'm quite bad at it.

I think it's not about grammar here. It's about implied thoughts. You said:

Maybe when i am old, i might be a singapore version of him.. haha build guitar and cheat your money! LOL~

So this naturally sounds like you're saying that you think John Suhr is a cheat? It's got nothing to do with grammar here. It's what you're trying to say which isn't very clear...

Not everyone's phrasing of a sentence is perfect. I believe it's time to let that go already.

Yes, not everyone's phrasing is perfect. Neither are comprehension skills, it seems. You're misunderstanding my point.

From a DIY-er's point of view, it's always interesting to see how others do their work, so there's always ample opportunities to learn. Nevermind that the person is viewed as a noob, or a demigod in this line.

What I'm actually asking, is IF Gr3y thinks Suhr is a cheat, then there must be something he's seeing that others are not. I'd like to know what it is. If Suhr guitars are like some of the larger commercial names today, throwing moderately acceptable quality out there but charging a premium due to the brand equity, then I want to know.

If Suhr is using substandard paints, techniques and materials, then I believe we have a right to know. If a DIY-er believes that a DIY job can rival a supposedly superior name like John Suhr, then all the more I'd like to know why. Not as in "pointing fingers" kind of knowing why, but rather, really wanting to know the truth, or rather the DIY-er's perspective. Simply for knowledge's sake.

Would I pit a DIY job against something like a Fender or Ibanez or Gibson? After understanding me about the way those main brands work, I'd say I would. In fact, most of these professional big name independant luthiers began as DIY-ers too!

Again, it's not about rights here. It's about perspectives.

wah biang.. you guys really nothing to do in office ah??

aniways.. grey i think the whole DIY thing is really cool. If i had more time i would really love to attempt the things youve done. Most of my "mods" have been done by our local techs...
Im trying to do more of the stuff myself as time goes by.

We should have a DIY THREAD where people can discuss finishing techniques and show their work... share cheap lobang for materials etc...

damn, dudes. chill.

this is why i'm damn scared when i'm posting in soft. playing around, accidentally say something wrong and you're f-ed in the a.

no offense to anyone in this forums. this is just a general observation in my slightly more than one year here. don't want to get f-ed in the a!

anyway, good job. i always have been admiring DIY-ers. I have always wanted to repaint my strat (black is such a "meh" colour), but damn scared i will screw up. I guess it's time to get a cheapo china strat body!

Hahaha... if there had been a simple clear clarification then nothing else would have happened.

We're all friendly people here!

Tee hee hee~

I don't think I missed your point, pardon me if I did but from what I understand, you're saying that Gr3y has thoughts about Suhr being a cheat? What I'm trying to say is Gr3y never meant that (or at least I think so). Sure he could have used better words to avoid all this confusion but sometimes they do get stuck in the back of our heads.

Anyways, nice work on that Strat, heh.

dudes, Grey meant it as a joke man.....why are all of you even debating about it.....its funny....

makes me wonder now whether in the future the office is going to influence me to nitpick on everything. LOL

yup he left. read his first post again. it changed.

for what its worth, good work tho :) iv always wanted either a woody/grainy guitar or a white one but mine (black) was on offer when i went to the store so kinda had to get it haha ..

no i'm not being sensitive(unless you insist this is being sensitive)

I'm just sad. Well i think it's really pointless to debate anyway. Anyway like i told my friend.. my objective of being such a show off is successful. Guess it's time for me to stop doing all these acts.

Yes you are being sensitive.

There was nothing brought up about your work and here you are complaining about misunderstandings with regards to your hobby, misunderstandings with regards to your want to share. Nothing was mentioned about those points.

What was brought up was just a simple clarify-and-that's-that situation.

Shaped to SRV profile
PICT0011.jpg

I'm interested to talk more about this. How did you get this profile or make it consistent throughout the neck? Did you reprofile it yourself? Or order it like this? If you did it yourself, then please explain how it's done. I'm not one who can DIY at all, so any knowledge shared on this would be interesting to learn. If this was indeed done by you, then honestly, that's a really good effort there. Not something many people would dare to attempt, or even know where to start from.

When you say SRV profile, I'm assuming you meant assymetrical. Was there any direct connection to the actual profile used on the original No.1? or even the Fender commercial model? What dimensions were used? What was your process?

Could you post another pic with a rubber band on the neck to show the actual shape? A bit hard to tell here, though it's obvious that it's assymetrical.

What I'm trying to say is Gr3y never meant that (or at least I think so).

You think, I thought... Who confirm? That's exactly my point here. I'm not saying he did or did not. I'm saying I DON'T KNOW what he meant. Do you?

When someone makes a comment like what he did initially, EXPECT to be taken to task on it. That's what society is like today. In this country, when you say something, you need to be prepared to back it up. It's called being responsible for your words and actions.

I'm not saying that Gr3y is WRONG to say what he did. He might be RIGHT. Honestly, I don't DIY, so I don't know how difficult the process is. I'm asking for an explanation on why he thinks so. For all you know, he might be onto something.

Also, for those who firmly believe that there's really something to these boutique luthiers (like Tyler, dePergo, Suhr and the like) other than just a souped up DIY job, I'd also like to know what it is. I feel that a real good effort takes innovation and creativity. Like what Vox is doing now, or like what Ibanez has been doing with the new ZR trems or what EBMM has done with the Silent Circuits and Tone Blocks or what ESP is doing with Earvana. Not just rehashing an age old design, changing the finish and woods, and calling it their own.

If Gr3y really did replane that profile assymetrically, then I'd say he's got some skills, and I for one would like to see more of his work in the future. I just wish that if he knew something we don't, then please share it with us...
