Luckily i'm not a singer, never had this problem. But to those i met, it's always the same issue. The ugly word DICTION, DICTION, DICTION.
"What to do LAH, we speak singaporean LEH, cannot help it MAH!!!!"
When the problem is the english we speak, we sing in the same way we speak...OUCH!!!
And when they try to find a vocal teacher to help them, it happens this way...
Student:
"I want to sing GOOD GOOD, can help me with my singing CAN OR NOT?"
Teacher:
"So you want to learn singing ISSIT, what do you want to learn HUH??"
Student:
"How much YOU CHARGE HUH??? I'm quite BROKE BROKE LEH!!!"
Teacher"
"Not much LAH, every month $100 ONLY LAH!!!"
Student:
"Ok LOH, I want to be very famous LEH"
Teacher:
"Sure CAN ONE LAH, I VERY GOOD ONE LEH"
Student:
"WAH SEH, WAH BAO YAH LIAO!!!!":p

but if you read it the other way, it is like a Singapore slang. Just like what rappers do? one day, when the Singapore slang so powerful, people might copy too.

i dun understand wot's the issue with the SG accent. If one day it becomes popular worldwide i wonder will u still bash it this much? Wot if one day the american accent isnt in?

Dude, we dun have to copy other pple. Being Singaporean is cool.

i hardly think so.... if its an accent that compliments us, thats fine.. most of us in singapore can't even speak proper, singlish free, english! gotta master the basics first before we take on a slang man.

I think the problem is about the way we were broad up. We grew up in an environment where everybody speaks Singlish, even some of my teachers.

To speak proper english is fine, just don't try to speak with a fake accent. I've heard sg students trying to slang with the Ang Mohs... Wah Lau, want to puke, felt so embarrassed being a singaporean at that time.

My point is, if you are not born with an accent, don't fake it. Even the ang mohs don't speak proper english themselves.

i rem last time got the taiwan star search .. the gal trying to act the english accent singing a english song... the judge said 'if ur a taiwanese then u have to be proud of being one.. why do u have to act like a ENGLISH WHEN YOUR NOT ONE?'

I think they think speaking with a fake accent makes them more "high class". My A**...

%*&$*%&*&%$*#$^&^&^%$#&%

Get a life!!! Talking about it makes me fume, shall shut up now...

:x

I'm proud of S'pore n I'm DEFINATELY proud of Singish.... cannot meh?

ATTENTIONS TO THOSE WHO CAN'T........ DUN STAY IN S'PORE LOR........ GO TO THE AH MOH COUNTRIES N BE SLAVES (2nd class citizens)........

Really, man......... can't stand those who say S'poreans this n tat........ make me wonder y these suckers still live here..... y dun they F!$K OFF........

Wah...

afterdeath, relax bro... looks like all the national day parades are doing something to your patrotism.

erm... I don't know if i should say this... but ... everywhere you go there will be racist. As much as they can deny, the truth is obvious, believe me, I've experience being part of the minority race before.

But the grass is not always greener in singapore too. I think you have to see what's it like outside sg to really pass your judgment. Aiyah, just like guitar, some like strat, some like lp, think you have to try it out yourself before you can say which is your favourite guitar.

Anyway, out of point, lets talk about music, the universal language...

hmm...speak whatever sounds good to u.
Accents are like tones/fashion/dressing style, if it sounds good to u and u want to imitate..y not? ..if singlish is what u prefer ..then good ..otherwise, y impose our personal preference over other folks?

Cheers! :D

i don't think we should be proud of singlish. but i don't think we should loathe it either. after all the french speak english with their accents like "bernard" ends up as "beier-nar". you don't see Jaque Chirac telling people to speak better english.

hell, people in Southern USA sound like rednecks and a bunch of hicks(they probabaly are), but you don't see the republican admisnistration telling to cool it on the " can i pleese have yer peeen"

so i dunno. if singlish is singapore culture though........ den okay lah.

i really hate what afterdeath is saying.

when emigrate to an "ang mo" country, you're not a 2nd class citizen. comon, that's as good as saying any minority race in a country is default disadvantaged.

WHICH WE'd LIKE TO BELIEVE IS NOT! what with our "regardless of race, language or religion". comon man, stop being a stereotype and open your eyes!

is it really necessary to hate a singaporean who does not speak singlish.
my mom grew up in memphis, tennesee. doesn't get more un-singaporean than that. but she's singaporean thru and thru now. so how ? Kick her out AH?

hey, relax lah, i think wad he meant if u not brought up with the accent, dun fake it and try to act like a foreigner. in a nutshell, be proud of ur er...heritage ?

Despite ur claims about 2nd rate citizenship, fact is, it DOES happen, and yes it DOES happen to our beloved Singapore as well. In fact, this phenomenon is so intrinsic in our basic cognitive functions that we do not even know it.

Eg. quote from common Singapore speech
"Wah, that Hong-Key think he were zai....." Hong Key is degrading, similar to chink or negro... you just don't feel it
"Alamak, you see that chinaman, so no style....." Again degrading...

There are countless more examples. We would like to believe Singapore to be clean and green...blah blah. But we're far from perfect. We still have racial tensions, discriminations..etc But our advantage is that we have tolerance.

Ok...BACK to "diction", I am totally supportive of the Singapore "SLANG" like the way we pronounce things...etc but I feel diction is important. Although everyday usage can be lax, and we probably would slip in those "lahs", "lors", we will have to moderate when we speak to foreigners. Social behavior states that humans always adopt other people's practices to make better communication, hence we tend to use "ang moh" accent (or try) when speaking to caucasians.... the only problem is trying too hard...

Don't be too harsh on these "wannabes" LAH :)

They are not wannabes actually. When speaking with caucasians, when you throw in all the 'lahs' and 'lohs' or speak the tone we speak, they would be blank in their faces. They wouldn't understand what we are talking about.
Some would try to learn our 'lahs' and 'lohs' too, but well!!!

I don't believe there is a need to proud of our heritage when we know it's our weakness. Our parents generation and before didn't know how to speak english, and so they came in with this singlish. Singapore's history is too short to dictate yet a dedicated culture. With our generation, it is our ideal and purpose to convert this singlish into something of our culture, something nice sounding that people would like and not detest or feel insulted by it. If there are so many people still disgusted by it, obviously these is a need to evolve.

Unlike the mexicans and french who had a long history of mixing with their english inmates, i believe that's how they develop an accent that sounds colorful and nice.

Maybe they find it useful. When they need to fill in some lyrics in their song and run out of words, just add the lahs and the lors.
