Electro-Harmonix Stereo Memory Man: Mike Matthews On Hazarai And More
July 28, 2007
Electro-Harmonix debuted quite a large number of new items at Summer NAMM 2007 in Austin, Texas, but one of the products EHX legend Mike Matthews is most proud of is the Electro-Harmonix Stereo Memory Man. This multi-functional guitar effects box is a serious piece of gear in a small package. Matthews says "The Stereo Memory Man has a lot of hazarai." When pressed just what exactly hazarai is, he says it's "A lot of extra stuff!" Hazarai is a Yiddish word used right on the box to describe the huge amount of features in this excellent unit.
The original EHX Stereo Memory Man featured dual outputs, (90 degrees out of phase with one another), 300ms of analog delay, plus controlled feedback and "bathtub" reverb. The new Stereo Memory Man has a multi-tap delay, reverse echo, tap tempo performance looping, and much more.
The new Memory Man design does not use Bucket Brigade analog chips made by Panasonic. Matthews says those chips were discontinued ten years ago, but EHX has a good supply of them for use in EHX products. He did not include them in the Stereo Memory man. "The Stereo Memory Man," Matthews says, "is digital, but it really has a wonderful warm analog sound. That's not hype," Matthews adds, "That's the truth."
Gearwire got a demonstration of the Stereo Memory Man at Summer NAMM 2007, keep watching for that video and many others from Electro-Harmonix
