if you plug a passive guitar straight into the 1/8" jack on your computer, you will not get a signal (or at most a very soft one)—the gain is too low. it's expecting a line-level signal when you are sending it an instrument-level signal. you should get a preamp or AI.

jbarks : the gain can be simulated via software plugged into a 1/8" mic input, just that it'll be very noisy . but the plus point I guess it's the fact that with a 1/4"male>1/8"m converter $1.50 and download free vsts from kvraudio etc you're good to go on a digitally simulated amp as most audio interfaces cost 2nd hand $50 onwards.
