Ebay cheated me???

Yesterday i bought something off ebay.com (not the SGP one) It costs 7.44US. Then i went to http://pages.ebay.co.uk/services/buyandsell/currencyconverter.html
to calculate the price, turned out to be 10+SGP

BUT when i got the payapal email, it charges me 11+SGP. THe current exchange rate is 1 USD = 1.44112 SGD, but the paypal says is 1 SGD = 0.675136 USD.

WTH, i know its a small amount but i waana buy more expensive stuff off ebay, these small figures will equate to big differences in price.

ANybody pissed off about this????

errr bro, it's a fact of e-life that different merchants have different exchange rates. Even paypal. It sucks but they are providing you a service after all so it's kind of like their payment?

chill out, that's why consider thoroughly first whether its easier to get it online or through a local shop

i'm pretty sure the money changer doesn't give u the exact currency conversion rates. They are a service and they too need to earn money. also, if you are using credit card there's additional charges

This is not fair man. Should'nt they all follow the current exchange rates?? Thought still can make use of the weak US currency now to buy some stuff....

I bought a lot of items off Ebay before and I knew I was going to pay a bit more due to Paypal's service...n I dun find it a hassle. :)

You don't actually think money changers and credit cards charge you using the actual exchange rates to the decimal, do you?

well, this is reality.. not everything will go the way you think it should.

anyway ebay is still a great place to get stuff not found in singapore or at a cheaper price.

precisely, i don't mind paying extra for something that is not readily available in singapore.

Perhaps it was a small amount?? I wanna buy stuff over a 100 USD. But i have to admit paypal sure is convienient. :P

Big deal. I've bought stuff over 300 bucks before and i'm sure other SOFTies have bought stuff way way more than that. You just have to accept the fact that different sites use different exchange rates. I've had quite a number of deals off ebay and they've all gone smoothly even if they were a home seller, not a shop.

yea its a lesson learnt, for me the exchange rate made my 700 bucks purchase shoot up to 1k plus a long time back, been cautious ever since

hehe you should've done tons of purchases some 8-9 months back, US currency was at it's weakest dropping to some SGD1.3 for a US Buck.

anyways, regards, i think the exchange rate is ALONG that line and wont be out of range drastically. it's just a guide on how much merchants will charge you so just be prepared.

anyhoots, don't anyone notice that shipping fees from the States to SG is quite expensive? i mean as compared from UK to SG that is.

Actually, PayPal rates are competetive with and are often more favourable than banks' credit card conversion rates.

You can't get an instant bank credit card rate because they tack on an additional levy over the interbank rates. But here's an example of a previous one:

My last forex conversion was done via a Citibank credit card transaction on 29 June, in British Pounds (GBP).

The Oanda rate for 29 June was 1 British Pound (GBP) = 2.40184 Singapore Dollar (SGD) (http://www.oanda.com/convert/classic - Oanda does retrospective calculations).

The Citibank rate for my transaction on the same date was 1 GBP = 2.46679 SGD.

Significant difference, yeah? It's like that throughout.

Just in case you want to know, today's current PayPal conversion rate is 1 GBP = 2.45 SGD - I can't check the retrospective rate as of 29 June though.

And yes, you can check the rates on PayPal BEFORE you make your payment. So you should be a little careful about allegations of cheating - there are some of us here on this forum who work for eBay. In the legal department no less. :)
