Dear Frummer.

I understand ur difficulties.. The situation that U are in now is similar to those gifted friends of mine when I was studying in KL from Jan to April. Well, I was studying in a music school. Quite prestigious but very the $$$$$!!

In my class, which is the pre-foundation course, we had 8 drummers including me.. There was this guy who was very good. And I mean good, I asked him wats the reason he opt to join this class since he is that good.. The technique, the flair... all there..

U know wat's he's answer??

"I can only get to play the drums whenever I'm here or when I'm jamming. Owning a drum set costs a bomb.. ie Tama Swingstar = RM2350!!!! We can get a Rockstar set over here in Spore !!! Basically, the estimated amount for an individual to own a proper drumset with a decent cymbals would be around RM6000!!!! in Malaysia..Imagine this, A DW5000 single pedal costs RM1250!!! and thats not even a doublepedal.. In spore, we could get a double pedal much cheaper. Those are for the ppl who lives in KL. Then wat about those who lives in the villages?? I'm not saying that they couldn't afford it but its like a mindgame...

Sabian B8 pack costs around RM950...
Basic hi-hats, medium crash and a 20" ride..

At swee lee it costs around $SD400.. Correct me if I'm wrong ok.

There's not much of a difference if u were to do the arithmatic between these two numbers and all that depends on the currency rates.

But if u were to glance at the price, RM950!!!! U would be shocked right.. I mean, add RM50 and it would be RM1000.. but if u were to convert it to SD, it would be about the same.. So, u would think, "Yah, its better for me to go back to Spore and buy lah."

That is Us. Singaporeans.. But what about my those drummers in M'sia? Die, Die, Death, Kill also must but bcos they have no where else to go.. But what I'd observe is that becauseof the scarcity of the things that they wanted, once they got hold of it, it would be guarded more heavier than a girl would be guarding her virginity..

There's one guitarists from Sarawak, who flew all the way to Benteley just to buy a Fender Guitar, After paying it, took a cab to KLIA and took the next flight home. When He reached his village, the first thing he did was to proudly display his newly wed wife, the Fender strat to his buddies.. That made him the hottest bachelor in his village.. For us,a fender is just a fender. A brand of guitar that we know. In some parts of M'sia, getting a Fender for a guitarist would give U ranking that's even higher that the Sultan.

I understand ur difficulties man..Sometimes ur parents might not be happy with ur interest and all that. Maybe because of the expenditure needed, the situation might not be to their likings.. Even though U are facing such difficulties, don't GIVE UP!!!! Whenever got free time, go and praktis!!!
Hope U get ur drums ASAP man.. I wanna hear some postings over here..

no money? save up,drink water eat at home, work on sch holiday or whatever time that you're free, when parents oblige, you should ask urself...do you want it really badly? then work your way out to get it,dun just sit around asking for other people's oppinion [no offense]

yep.... i agree. since ure still living wif yer parents, it still is their house/their roof.
i was 20 when i got my first kit. it was a practice pad. i den sold it off to get another kit. (2nd hand sets are alot more expensive back den compared to now) den sold adt off to get my current roland vdrums.

and all dat wif NS pay.... hehe

bottomline, get a job, once u get it wif your own money. u can have more say in it. juz dun forget to practic eyer strokes while waiting... hehe.

hmm...sure isn't easy for a drummer to practice in a hdb estate...but wat the hell, sound proof the room...prob got spend some money on that, but its worth it.

anyway, 90decibels is way too loud, imagine a pasa malam generator, but louder a bit...if not wrong, the limit is set for hdb is from either 40 or 45 db, cos my friend kanna complaint by his neighbours for his noisy aircon unit. so thats wat i remember cos some ppl from the relevant authority went to his place to take the readings.. 8O

Just wanna tell u guys that i had put up an ad to GIVE AWAY my 3 huge rolls of synthetic wool thats as large as a pillow each. Anyone interested just gimme a call to arrange come pick it up.

My recommendation is SOUNDOFF Silencer pads. Its fantastic. Sold of mine together with the kit. Test it out yourself. Costs about $120 for the entire set of snare toms bass drums hihat cymbals... yada yada...

read carefully before u start to quote anything..

anyway, frummer, i know how u are feeling. my parents also objected to it. but in any case, just by all means don't let ur skills stagnate!! :)

Hey I think u can persuade your mom again to go to the music shops with you to hear how some drums can be made soft. I own a Pearl RT at home (HDB 5rm) with a snare..its a 6 inch deep snare so it can be loud..

One thing is that I don't use sticks much. They're too loud for a snare in a HDB flat. I got hot-rods for my real skins on the snare, and on the mesh-heads fitted on the toms.

Yeah you cannot really do buzz rolls or dbl strokes using the Hot-Rods but u can do most other things if you don't mind the muffled sound it produces.

Other stuff you can do
1) Don't buy a crash cymbal or ride. Hihats are the loudest you can go
2) Put more pillows in the bass drum
3) Use brushes if ure the jazzy kind
4) Use alternatives like tambourines to replace louder drums?
5) The Sabian things work well too..forgot what they're called. Silentones?

Just my 2 cents worth:)

Im am that jazzy kind... but parents will nv allow...i guess i jux depend on studios n let it deteriroate

hey i know some drummers who became quite good without having to buy their own drum set......hang in there man.....maybe try save u're money and buy the drum set piece by piece maybe starting off from the snare drum 1st...then the kick....then the hi hat....

i understand how u feel......my parents didn't want me to get an electric guitar due to the same reasons(altho they were more straightforward, telling me honestly that they themselves can't stand the noise) and i had to practice only on a classical guitar at home...more of under the block than at home.. :P ....but after i got my first pay....hehe...all hell broke loose...

hehe...great for u...

piece by piece?surely i can get the snare first...but...it will b quite awkward....my carpet is already lyk a snare to me

PS : welcome to the forum :D

How about buying an e-kit piece by piece? Sure, it would take a while to save the money and buy each piece but it's gonna be worth it. Or at least just the bare essentials for an e-kit (snare, bass, hi-hat, 1 cymbal, 1-2 toms).
