i appeal to all musicians here young and old.

DO NOT FALL INTO THIS 'PLAY FOR FREE GIG'!

IF THEY HAVE THE MONEY TO OPEN THE 'SINGAPORE ARTS CAFE' -THEY MUST HAVE THE FUNDING TO PAY FOR THE BANDS TO PLAY.

this saturday, heartrocksingapore is giving popcorn, prawn crackers and quay-chi for the foolish bands performing there.

these people - heartrock and arts cafe have the word 'singapore' in them. they have the funding from the national arts council.
they have the money!
BUT you, the performing band get NOTHING -unless you all really like prawn crackers.

do not turn up for your scheduled gig, boycott them!

True voice - are you saying that theres budget all along but the org are not using to pay the bands at all?

Organizers - what do you say to this?

true voice, you're a bloody communist la.. if we wanna play for free, thats our problem.. if the bands want to play, to promote the local music scene, even if we play for free, why do u care?? cuz i dont mind my band playing for free.. cuz all we wanna do is to show that we are doing our part for s'pore
and that s'pore has young bands who are willing to show what they have, accept criticism and improve..

hey ho.....let`s go!!!!!!!!!!

an advice to true voice n fgl....dun say things that u dunno....it`s better to keep mum n mind ur own business sumtimes...

just let them do wateva they wanna do...whomever they wanna play with...

new young bands should thank the organisers for giving them exposure instead, if you think your band is a pro band, give the other local young bands to have a chance for exposure

Its nice to see that for once, everybody's post in a thread makes sense. :D

Dont listen too much of GnR, Live and let live la. bye!

no.1 - if u guys aren't sure abt the details, please don't mislead other musician

no.2 - unless u guys are gd enough to ask for paid gig, if not please don't mention abt it

no.3 - if u guys wan to get paid gig try pubs & other places, gigs by heartrock & some of other organizer.. they do gigs & events to support the music scene in singapore

so guys get your info right, before u start flaming ppl here. ya?

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I think a band with little or no exposure should be extremely greatful to be given the opportunity to play and get their music out there AND become better musicians in the process.

There is a huge difference between a commercial venture like a pub or club trying to get a band to play for free under the auspices of 'trying you out' and someone trying to support unknown bands by giving them a place to play, some exposure and the opportunity to network with thier peers.

Some of the most famous bands in the world have come through a 'pay to play' system where you have to buy an allotment of tickets and have to make flyers and posters and stand out on Sunset Strip trying to sell tickets to your shows. If you dont sell all the tickets then you are out of pocket.

I feel sorry for guys like Heartrock who put all their heart and soul into promoting local music, no doubt often left out of pocket for thier trouble, and no matter how much they put into it there is always someone to criticise....

if u look at the thread for the heartrock singapore gig at the waterfront, you'll realize that they never asked fro bands to perform. people who wanted to apply were also turned away. wawd does this say of the event? are u saying all these because ur band cldnt get in maybe? bands like ronin, fatskunks etc are playing. when bands like these arent even complaining, why are you? nobody asked you to play anyway. nobody asked anybody to play anyway.

when people dont organise gigs, u all bitch and moan that there are no gigs, no chance to perform no this no that

when people organise gigs, you all start conspiracy theories on how the organiser is duping everyone and how the bands are always victimised because they have to pay a huge lump sum and get nothing in return and bla bla bla

proves my theory correct, singaporeans cant live a day without complaining about something

the_true_voice: you can suck my dick while you're at it.

tell me, how many organisers do you know pay the bands? as in monetary, cold hard cash? chances are, if you're not a big name popular band, you're not getting paid. Jon,from the arts cafe, was nice enough to let us play. at a pretty nice place too. and he does give the performers a complimentary drink. i enjoyed my night there yesterday, even thought i messed up my set big time, i had alot of fun listening to all the music. if it weren't for this small time gig, i wouldn't have heard of all these people. all in all, you're still a bitch

Be humble. Your band good enough to warrant being paid?

+100...
very true... even gd bands dun mind not bein paid...

if u noe u wun get paid, dun play la... stupid sia... not our problem wat...
go find other payable gigs and play k.

Hey thank you very much for standing by. I don't think he cares two hoots about whether bands get paid or not. It is only a red herring. It is also not about his band being rejected cos only one band asked to play in this event.

i think the demand for local music... or live gigs in this case, is not big enough. the local music scene is still quite immature and in order to help it grow fast, i don't think organisers should charge audience and over-kill price just to pay the bands that are performing yet.

if ur band is not good, improve... if ur band is good... well, be better... good enough to be comparable to international bands...

still not getting paid? work with other ppl or bands and help them improve too... the only way to get more high-paying gigs is to get higher demand for local gigs and the main way to do that is to improve as a whole... its hard to do it single-handedly...

so if any of us think we're good, be better... until we're DT's standard and still not getting paid, then complain

hey man.... screw this guy that started this thread..... its really great that people like heartrock and jon are actually doing this kinda stuff for local bands... and i am really thankful to them..... i will be playing in both gigs.... and for the org to have to much faith in my band for allowing us to do so is enough payment for me... and for jon, who's running a business, to open up his cafe for strangers to play in it... and give a complimenatry drink some more.....

and you think NAC give them money, the money go inside pocket ah..... organising a gig take alot alot alot alot of time and money......

i consider it an honour just to be in both events to showcase what my band has to offer..... without these people, i would not be able to do so..... i think you are into music for all the wrong reasons... you want money, be a doctor.....

thanks jon from singapore art cafe...

and thank you anthony from heartrock singapore.....

see you guys on thursday and saturday respectively.....
