DIY Matte Finish

Hi. I own a Yamaha RG 420 for 3 years now. I love it till death, however after years of playing, the part of the body where i pick has become glossy (Beez says i have worn out the matte finish. It's just the picking area and i think sending it for professional refinish, as much as that is really cool, is a tad expensive for a small area. And being a DIY person myself, i would like to noe how i can fix up that glossy area and make it smooth and matte again cuz i really can't stand the glossiness (its not even glossy per se, its more of oily mutton soup kinda look).

Sheesh i dun want to scrap the paint off too you noe haha.
But they actually sell matte hodge podge at Spotlight Plaza Sing. But i dun actually noe how to use it on guitar.

Thats why I said grade 00000 steel wool. Will cloud up your finish and "matt-i-fy" it...

i'd say keep it real and it'll show that you've played the shit out of that guitar. People are sandpapering and throwing darts at their guitars to simulate years of abuse. Keep it real and be proud that you've spend so much quality time with your guitars. Most guitar bought these days are kept inside their cases most of the time.

Tht's what i always tell myself (as a form of comfort) that the wear and tear depicts my amt of hard work i put into guitar playing haha. But the glossiness and my sweaty palms dun go well together haha. Oh well i'll see how it goes.

Its easy, just use non-glossy laquer

i had the same problem also. my matt black is turning gloss
at the edges and the resting part. is there any non-gloss cleaners?

If it is a matt oil finish, which I doubt you have, you can re-oil it. If it was a matt urethane finish you are stuck. The gloss you have is due to your arm or hand buffing the body as you play over time. This is a physical transformation and you cannot 'fix' it. You can however sand the whole body down and re-oil it, if you want oil, or put on a matt finish again. You can also refinish the whole body in a gloss finish. Alembic used to offer a matt urethane finish and becuase of these sorts of issues, they no longer offer a matt finish unless you request for it.
