i've been thinking of finally getting a distortion pedal...anyone knows of the best distortion pedal to play normal rock (i play from anything...mostly Tool,Soundgarden,Nirvana and APC)...so what do y'all suggest i buy? i was looking at the orange BOSS distortion pedal and the grunge digitech pedal...which one is better? and is there anything better?

thx in advance :D

i'm into the amp's distortion more than pedals. it's the best drive source which doesn't tamper with your guitar's tonal manifestation (wood/ pickups).

BOSS DS-1 is a mild distortion unit. invest in this one only if you are supplementing another drive source- it's most effective as a booster.

Tool = Adam Jones uses his amp distortion

No wonder I don't seem to sound like or play like him... hmmm.... shucks, should have gotten a CLASSIC instead of the Original.

If you wanna get boss pedals like sub said dont expect high gain stuff from the Boss Ds-1. I prefer distortion from the amp too but that is of course if you have a good amp. If you can afford the sansamp stuff get the Gt-2 sounds pretty alright for the stuff you are doing. The tri-ac does not cover that kind of stuff as well it gets pretty noisy esp on the brit channel past 3 o clock. Hope that helps!

then if i use the amp distortio...how do i switch to clean? i mean there's songs that u need to switch between the two rite? Black Hole Sun and such..

There is thing called guiter "volume roll off"
As the amp is on high gain lowering your guitar volume tames the gain without losing the shine...btw most amps got channel select stompswitch

clean tones- no problems for these pros. they have splitters/ channel footswitch to handle this toggling.

so what distortion pedal do you have? and u use the amp's drive?

amp distortion is usually better, but when performing live at gigs, u might not get the amp u'd prefer and u'd might know how to get the tone u want out of the amp...

for basic rock sound i'd suggest the ds-1. its cheap and it is moddable should u be not happy with the sound it gives...

ts-7 is also a cheap over drive pedal and with a ds-1 and a ts-7 in chain, u'll have more options on using 1 as booster, distortion, overdrive or both distorition and overdirve at the same time...

the ts-7 is also quite moddable should u not like the sound...

amp simulators are good too, but they're best coupled with amps which does not colour ur tone too much like vox or laneys

I use Rapture and my Musicman volume set at 8 = high gain

You can do the same with any decent pedal or amp

AEnimic, amps can have a clean channel and a distorted channel. Some have 3 channcels, clean, crunch, heavy.

So you can swap around during a performance.
