Diffs between a 9 gauge set-up guitar and the 10 gauge set-up guitar...

there is definitely a noticeable difference between 9 n 10s for me lah... But i guess the difference will be more when u play clean or slight breakup than with alot of overdrive

Its different enough for me to steer clear of 9s, so there is a difference

Nobody is saying that string gauge can define an entire genre.

we're just telling him what differences he will hear/feel/perceive after changing string gauges in general.

THERE IS a difference when you change from 9s to 10s, and 10s to 9s.

Anyway, to the TS, i find that playability-wise, ernie ball 10s are the most versatile. You will go a long way. In fact, i only started experimenting with string gauges after 3 or 4 years of playing.

So my final advice:

just take a set of 10s first. Practise a lot. Experiment with other things like your amp and your pedals first. THEN you start thinking about changing string gauges.

that pretty much happened to me too. after years of playing, one would go on a quest to redefine one's tone & varying string gauge is one of the less costly affair in doing so. after this itch, i started to try out the different pick materials/ thickness as well.

There's no fixed rule with regards to genre and string gauge..its up to the individual. For me, I've always used GHS NR 10s and now experimenting again with Pyramid strings 10s which feels like 9s when I 1st played them :)

i have the Pyramid here with me as well... still deciding which guitar it should go into

Kyokkai, don't worry about it. You can't please everybody. No matter what, you're bound to make enemies everywhere. Just be honest and true to yourself.

On a thread like this, although people will automatically say that you can find the info online, I would say this thread is a good one.

Often, comparing between 9s and 10s goes beyond the technical aspects (which can be found online) and subjectiveness comes in.

People have their reasons for choosing a certain gauge and this is a thread where people can share their preferred gauge and reasons.

hehe, the problem is not about making enemies but having a different views outta one misinformed judgement or perception based on one limited experience but yet wanting to "share" or help in a general sense.

its over estimating one self importance to really think that theres enemies to make, online in such forum.

anyway, part of the fun in playing geetar aint just about asking, but to really explore beyond the knowledge of onself, without knowing what we can get or what others has done before. In the case for most things to do with geetar, most things/mod can be done as long as there money to spare and willingness to try for oneself, without relying on others/reviews.

The effect on tonality with the usage of different gauges for strings is only a small part of the equation. It is more of a change in playability, with the strings being easier to bend with .9s compared to .10s.

For someone like me who's used .10s for years, changing to gauge .9s is an obvious change. I'd say DR Pure Blues! Say, anyone knows where I can get DR Hi-Beams in SG? Davis stopped stocking em like 2 years back?

I will heed ur advice:)

yar too many different reasons to have to change string gauge.
pick attack contact point, tone, ease of bending, feel, how it affects diff styles of playing eg. legato.

personally i had a horrible hand ache after excessive bending on 10s, (which kinda means i have weak hands im sure.) after swapping down to 9s, problem solved:) but i did feel the change in tone, it did sound a little thinner. what to do, my pups, amps, pedals are so dynamic, so good:)

I have this theory. If say I'm comfortable with gauge 10s on an E standard guitar, I'd use 11s on a D standard guitar and 12s for a C standard guitar. The tension is rather consistent at least for me. I don't feel that much difference when I swap between my E standard and C standard tuned guitar. scale length plays a part in this mix too but I guess that's another story.

alamak! why did the person give you negative rep... ridiculous... who is it?

anyway, it's been like 3 days already. what gauge have you decided to use?

just askin' :D
