it's... everything man. listen to gnr. then listen to audioslave. modern rock can contain high pitch vocals too. a modern rock song and a classic rock song can both use the came chord progression. it;'s the entire package man.

Or how much make up and hair spray they use
Nooooo man, that's glam rock. Hair spray, and how tight and uncomfortable their clothes are.

Hey!! KISS and Alice Cooper wear makeup!! But I like to think glam rock as classics too.

my take ... classic rock r those OLD rock back in the 60s - early 90s (think beatles, buddy holly, Bad company, Uriah Hiph, Free, Cream, Deep Purple, Scorpions etc etc)

Modern rock wud b those early 90s - current time (think Creed, Red Hot chilli pepper, Hoobastank etc etc) not too sure about modern players, paiseh

why classic rock ? hmm, guess it's similiar to Classical music (cos they r old) and up till today, still got ppl listening to it, playing it ... :)

just my 2¢

WAT? similar to classical? no way man, not in a million years.

concept? similar? no way!

classical has been around for centuries, and the style is very diff.

cant compare though

from wiki:

A few examples of popular modern rock radio bands are Green Day, Blink 182, Sum 41, Matchbox Twenty, Goo Goo Dolls and Linkin Park.

As alternative rock's popularity in the mainstream declined, heavy metal, nu-metal, rap metal, pop punk, emo and other commercially successful forms of rock music also became labeled as modern rock.

so i think modern rock's actually quite a general term used for radio frendly stuff... which uses some resembalence of calssic rock instruments like the drums, bass and guitar...

classic rock is like whoa... refers to those bands who were pioneers in rock and had almost the same influences... may not be radio friendly to every1

eh not really...... bands like Rage Against the Machine, and Nine Inch Nails etc are also considered modern rock but they're not exactly super radio-friendly or enjoy vaulted commerical success on the airwaves. I think it's more of the style of music that characterises it from classic rock, both of them are very different in nature.

btw MadWereWolfBoy, using drums, bass and guitars doesn't mean it stems from classic rock. the music isn't characterised by the instruments used, jazz uses these instruments too and it's as different as night and day.

modern rock is more song and marketing oriented, maybe. while classic rock is more around the overall sound and image and message of the band.

classic rock because maybe those bands were the first ones to start rock? acdc, led zeppelin, scorpions you get the deal
