Death Magnetic - Metallica's 9th Studio Album

Some people may diss it, some people may love it, but I personally think that the Black Album deserves applause for its good studiowork/mixing/production. I have YET to hear drums sound that commanding.

It may be lacking in terms of technical song writing if you compare it to "Justice for all" (Justice being my favourite Metallica album, btw), but it is that simplicity that makes metal palatable for consumption, which is infact a style of song writing that is HARDER to do; which I would say showcases talent. It is through the Black Album that got people converted to metalheads and push them to discover more.

Load/Reload was a pretty disappointing affair, but I still enjoy the stuff in there. You cannot think "metal" when you listen to those; more "hard rock".

S & M gave a lot of promise. But I have to say that St Anger is not a Metallica album; it is a Bob Rock album. They made the right decision to fire him.

well said.

as a musician and music lover who does like a little metal here and there,

i think all the music Metallica made with Cliff was awesome, and it started going downhill after he passed away :(

just my opinion!

im a huge preBLACK album fan \m/ but i still enjoy listening to several songs from the black album.

anything after that... was just different! wasnt thrashy enough hahah.

shouldnt they call it MAGNETIC DEATH instead? sounds more natural to me!

Cliff definitely had an influence, but he would also be the first to defend Metallica's change of direction. Of all the members, he was the guy who listened to the widest range of stuff.

But I do not think that Cliff would let Bob Rock dictate the sub par post-Black releases. In any case, change in direction for Metallica thereafter would be an evolution, rather than degredation.

haha. imo a really corny name. ah well. i hope they live up to the high expectation that they set for themselves. Not really that excited about this release after Load, Reload and St Anger, but I hope they will sound like what they say.

Lol, I'm not too keen on the name either, but the surviving Metallica fans among us can only hope for what is to come.

Rob Trujillo is underrated, love the way he jumps around on stage. Imo Cliff plays the bass like a guitar.

Underrated meh? I thought everyone also think he's cool? Maybe he hasn't really showed what he can do as a bass contributor in the releases yet. St Anger's bass was done by Bob Rock anyway.

Cliff's style of playing is his signature, which what makes him Cliff. Anesthesia wouldn't have happened if he play slaps, heh.

And, I honestly like Jason Newsted. Poor guy came in as an underdog, left as an underdog. Damn sad. I'm surprised he stayed that long.

True, i agree with THOA. Metallica was great when there was Cliff Burton & Jason Newstead. but ever since Newstead left the band... everything went wrong.

anyone who says metallica isnt metal or wasnt metal turned their backs on metal are very wrongly mistaken in my opinion. them and exodus were KEY in starting the thrash metal rage in the bay area and without metallica metal would be very different from wat it is now and perhaps metal would even cease to exist.

i've always believed that the 4 most important bands in metal of all time are black sabbath, venom, slayer and metallica cos each of these bands played stuff so original and extreme in their time that they paved the way for a dickload of other bands.

I disagree on that. there were already thrash bands even before Metallica. Eg. Overkill. They didn't start the bay area thrash. It was already thriving. If I remember correctly they were from los angeles but came to san francisco at the insistence of Cliff if the really wanted him to join Metallica.

+1 to bro wasp

cliff b. was living in SF,and he persuaded JH and LU to be in SF if they wanted to him to join Metallica..I'm a huge fan of Cliff era Metallica and as far as I'm concerned..they lost a fan with the 90's direction that they took.

I used to be a big Metallica fan. Reading on any article I could find about them. Can say I know fairly well about their history. I admit starting to notice them only during the "black album" but it was the earlier albums that made me a big fan. Then they started selling out and beating around the bush about their metal background. They lost another fan as well.

In case anyone is wondering, I respect them as musicians and a band who have basically changed my direction for musical preference. In fact, the Black Album was a significant tier for my personal life, not just musically.

So, yes, I was a Metallica fan. Perhaps, still is... even though I may detest their recent offerings.

i was at metallica show when they played singaland in 93. They rocks!

But then, that was then and fast forward to now, i think i'll settle for some mando pop instead. I've changed, for the worst, and them, doesnt matters much anymore

bye 'tallica, thanks for the memories.

I always thought the Four Heavenly Kings of metal was Slayer, Anthrax, Metallica and Megadeth? hur hur hur....

I wonder why Kreator isn't credited as one of the most influential thrash bands. As far as I can remember, their history is as long as Metallica's.

Anyway, Metallica's MOP album was the one that caught my attention first. I wouldn't say that I'm a total Metallica fan, but I've felt that St. Anger was a letdown and I hope this new album won't let all of us down.

But remember, a band will definitely change its direction when it goes commercial. That is sadly... The truth.

It's hard to find a band that manages to stay true to its roots when they are commercialized.
