Cost of a decent refretting job on a maple neck

From your first post on this thread. We'd assume that you meant being students or not, we all can afford high prices for a refret, since we can afford other things in life. Next time type properly and comprehensively la, then no misunderstanding!!!

You were referring to the 2nd post in the thread?

I stand corrected, as I did explain in the 3rd post because rottenramoe seeked to clarify it.

No lah, I wasn't being harsh when I said that... apologies as I didn't take care to word it or emote it properly.

All assumtions lah of couse, with a friendly wink!

BACK TO FINDING LUTHIERS!

ShredCow

I've been to da*** for a setup of my JS1000 Edge Pro & they could not do it!!!, so i email malcom about it & he confidently said that " after the setup, it will be the best guitar you've ever played" I believe that Malcolm is a very experienced luthier, so for shred recomending Malcolm, i think its no doubt about it, although prices might be abit steep. But since we have the $$$ to buy expensive effects & amps, Y can we fork out for a re-fret? hmmmm............

rottenramone

Gaaaa... its plagarised from Stan @ HAS-Sound! hehehe... oh well. Tone searches usually do end up in flame wars don't they? (pssst, TGP...)

Rottenramone, you are about as rotten as your name suggests! No one has tickled me more in a long time. You should seriously consider a career in stand up. Cheers mate

Answer to Q1 - No, don't intend to. Yes, I've seen. Playability is OK, nothing to rave about!
But there is no real need to 'advertise' for him, IMHO. Let his craft speak for himself and not by someone else.

Answer to Q2 - Never.
I'm on very good terms with nearly everyone (concerning our axes) at Peninsula/Excelsior area, so, if one rips me off, there goes the reputation.

Answer to Q3 - None.
If you've been to a tech could not setup a floyd rose properly, my sympathies.

Cheers!

i think we'll have to see the threadstarter's budget first. imo, that shd be the most important pt to begin with.

i'm also looking for a luthier btw. malcolm was on top of my brain's recall list when it came to luthiers. but when he quoted me a price, i was, quite frankly, put off at the pricing. i'm trying to find other luthiers/repair dudes as well.

if there's anyone u know who's good, maybe can post up the contacts here.

The problem with good refrets is that sometimes it not worth refreting El Cheapo guitars as a really good fret job is easily $250 upwards, more for set up & extra for maple necks. I do refrets myself BUT I DREAD doing maple necks... especially on a mint but vintage finished instrument ...

On the flip side of the coin - if you have an old, valuable instrument that you are not considering selling - it's worth every cent to get a good fret job by a top notch repairman. I've seen the "battle damage" on many axes by "so-called" luthiers here & overseas.

interesting..what's the difference between refretting a rosewood and maple neck?

Rosewood necks - being dark, basically unfinished woods will allow easy sanding & mite hide the odd mistake or two.... a finished maple neck... You wanna sand down gotta refinish, wont hide nicks (unless it's a beat up old piece) and ESPECIALLY vintage pices which have a thinner layer of finish (4-6 coats) and mite just be stripped off if the masking tape U use is too hi -tac...

Q1.
People ask, I recommend, that's it. As for your mention on playability, the guitar would have been tweaked to the owner's preference.

Q2.
That is good for you, I've had some who have tried to rip me off so I would NEVER recommend them to anyone regardless of budget.

Q3.
Shocking that such techs exist till today huh? And they advertise their services as a guitar tech. Again, I'll never recommend them to anyone.

Ooooo...

There's a long story behind it with a couple of friends, also SOFTies... quite... amusing and self contradictory!

Btw, anyone knows where is the nearest Plek equipped guitar center/workshop/shop?

You hit it on the head, leecs.

"But since we have the $$$ to buy expensive effects & amps, ...."
The threadstarter is just a student. If he has rich parents to support his hobby, fine :D . But if he can't afford it?

In a nutshell or cowbell, the cow should understand the meaning of affordability in this case before recommending a solution. Example: If my salary is enough for instalments on a toyota altis, a ferari/bently is definately out of the question.

Like the rotten one has mentioned, it is all about budget and affordability.

Malcolm has his share ofcustomers who can afford his rates. The Mandarin Hotel chicken rice case study applies here. It's the customer's wishes, personal preference, spending power, etc.

ROCK!
