Dime, the party most at fault is Sanlu - the one implicated in the infant deaths. There are obvious cover ups - mainly from them.
Guitarcritic, I have 3 children. All except my youngest drank China milk since they were 1. And it was one of the brands implicated (though not Sanlu). My youngest is currently 1 and therefore spared (breastfeeding save a lot of problems). So...yes, I do understanding how the people here feel, and yes, I am concerned, and yes, I am angry. But remember one thing - people in the rest of world has a choice. We who live in China (esp in rural and semi-rural areas) DON'T have a choice (actually not true - we do have a choice of not drinking milk, but then, none of us knew about the adulteration until recently).
So sweeping statements do hurt us who lives here and have little or no choice. I agree that there's no excuse. But saying not to buy China products does nothing, changes nothing, and hurts the common people. Even I have a choice - of leaving China if I'm unhappy about it. The people here are born here and they can't leave. This is their life. The world is unhappy - yes. But they are not as unhappy as us living here with our children drinking the milk for years without knowing it.
However, I refuse to believe China will not change. Otherwise I would have left long ago. My first 2 years here - I was terribly disillusioned and complained about everything I saw. Then I realised that it's not fair - it's not fair to the people here who are stuck in the system. I can leave - they can't. So I stop complaining. One thing I've learned is this - any form of political (or similar) pressures forcing China to change will amount to nothing. It will only backfire as China is likely to retaliate. Their fault? No...it's the socio-cultural-political situation that people outside China will never understand. They are changing. But as I said - they will do it their way. And yes, I believe they will improve, and they are. China is not going to change in 1 day. This tainted milk saga is a good lesson for them. A few years ago, they would have hidden it so well that nobody in the world will ever find out ..The very fact that media had so much coverage shows that China is serious the matter and had changed.
So...I'm hopeful.
