Can Stratocaster play metal genre?

Singlecoil pickups vs. humbuckers.

Humbuckers are the choice of the vast majority of metal musicians. So obviously a strat copy with default singlecoil pickups won't be able to match those tones. Though I do think singlecoils can do metal. They just sound different from the norm. I dislike Malmsteen's tone, honestly, but if Brent Hinds from Mastodon can use a strat with singlecoils for a recording session and sound great, why not?

I agree with Naviros. Technique plays a massive role in the sound you produce.

Actually I think it depends on which metal ur referring to: classic metal or modern metal. My 60s vintage single coils on my Strat can do classic metal fine, just a matter of tweaking the tones to get it sounding right..but if for modern metal, humbuckers would be the way to go. Eddie Van Halen put a humbucker in a DIY strat and the rest is rock history :)

Yes, there are but it is all about what the individual wants for himself and what he wants to do with it and get from it. I could have gotten something else but I am shallow and materialistic asshole with poor taste so I went for the Stratocaster body shape and head stock, with a nice Fender decal on it, for my metal Strat.

single coils and humbuckers both suck...

old sch danelectro lipstick tube pickups ftw.... :D

Depends on your definition of metal.

Some people who like modern metal dont find Iron Maiden/Blackmore/Yngwie metal enough.

Go hone your technique before thinking about gear.

Whatever the genre the TS is playing, all we know is that he's looking at thick, heavy distortion. Only question is, modern or classic.

depending on your amp- swapping pickups wouldn't be a beneficial move...

Hi Sub..

Having said that, any "bedroom-practice" amp or small ones like the Marshall MG10/15 etc that works well with swapping-pickups? Not intending to get big amps, just small ones. Main usage is usually in the jamming studio/gigs etc. Looking for one that can serve well in the bedroom and also in the jamming studio.

* TS: Hope am not hijacking this thread, since bro Sub already mention this, so might as well i ask... :)

Well I like to have a thick heavy distortion, modern metal...sounds like A7X,As I lay dying I like kind of that sounds...

unfortunately, these amps are not responsive to such pickup changes. i'd say you invest in an amp with a 12" driver to hear the difference, nothing expensive though.

I'm not sure if it can play metal but I've seen people playing metal on strat with humbuckers before...just not sure if its really the guitar...

IMO, any guitar with humbuckers can nail some really awesome modern metal tones, whether strat, flying-V, etc. Of course, with the right equipment. Plugging some super power BC Rich Assassin into a solid-state 10-watt amp with limited gain tones won't produce a good modern metal tone either.

i'd say in this case the amplifier and cab plays a larger role in change of tone. if not, the next thing to look in the whole setup would be the distortion pedal.

i think pickups would be the last thing ts would wanna look at if he wants a drastic change in tone. one thing ts can try is to adjust pickup height first, try moving it closer to the strings, ie make the pickups higher for a more ballsy tone.

i've seen people complain their pickups suck just to find out that the pole pieces are over 1cm away from the strings. like that of course suck la!
