Bought the new Vox Vintage Coiled cable...

I was comparing with a 12 ft long Lava ELC cable - the price difference is slightly more than twice the price of 1 x 9ft Vox Vintage Coil - but the sonic differences were... man... rather intriguing. The Lava has been my cable of choice for a long time - I really enjoy the clarity and dynamics it maintains.

The Vox had muffled highs. Lows were smeared, muddy-ish. This made the mids stick out quite a bit. I can imagine this will be rather nice to fatten up single coils for that bluesy vibe...

Biggest shocker - the Vox introduced more distortion and it was quite a bit more compressed. These differences were apparent even with compression on or when using light overdrive.

Playing slap guitar sounded lifeless on the Vox. Playing bluesy stuff was nice. Banging away at clean-ish break-up tones was muddy, messy. Playing jazz was nice but had like a blanket over the tone. Metal... well, using the Toneczar Openhaus, there were minor differences but hey, its metal, I can still tap so its okay.

Overall, I think the VVC does seem to live up to its name.

I'll be giving it away to my friend.

Wow, you got good ears. Seriously, while I understood what you wrote, my ears couldn't identify a thing...

I simply, err, use whatever cable i think is decent?. ;)

I can use whatever cable is decent too. Its not a biggie. However, I got a choice this time round. :)

The key to hearing it is to a/b. Just a/b between 2 cables and you should be able to hear the differences.

Just an interesting notion.

Wow... someone brings in Lava, that's rad. Very good cables... very good.

jdawg, I don't have a Canare GS-6 with me. Do you know how they compare to say... Belden cables? Because the Canare vs Belden difference, I vaguely recall - canare cables are darker and less clarity. Not a big difference but changing all the patches in my 12 - 15 pedal pedalboard, the change was rather obvious.

That GP review is interesting. They mentioned a "punch" factor and the Vintage Coil has less punch than the Lava ELC.

I actually got the Vintage Coil because I thought it made sense when teaching guitar in a small room - you don't get coils and coils of cable lying around. I don't actually have any gas to check out new stuff so I doubt I'd get the Vox Class A.

actually the reason why i got the coily cables is because they dont tangle. when the whole floor is dumped with wires and cable, normal cable getting tangled can give a real headache..

Totally understand the convenience of a coiled cable. And it looks cool to boot. Oh well, I guess I better check out the Lava or Bullet coiled cable instead. I actually don't mind that the Canares are a bit dark, but then again I've only compared it to a Planet Waves and a Mogami.

Same here. TYMusic's Canare's good enough for me.... As long as it's durable and it works live....

of course... different strokes for diff people.
