what CHIP does the BOSS SD2 uses?

hey, i got a boss sd2. as you all know, it has 2 channels, the lead and the crunch. the lead channel is awesome at low and mid gain but a lil noisy at high gain, but i love it anyway. then there is this crunch channel which does not deliver enough drive even if u max the gain. hence i got 2 questions:

1) is there anything i can do to increase the gain of the crunch besides modding it?

2) is there any kind soul out there who can share his settings for the sd2 with me?

3) if i have to mod the sd2, is it possible to easily mod it to sound like a ts808, just like u can easily mod a ts9 to a ts808 spec? and any lobang as to where i can mod it?

i'd take the sd2 as it is. i place it before my silverkiss as the silver kiss has a 3 band eq so i'll tweak the tone on the sd2 first then trim accordingly on the silverkiss.

To me the SD-2's crunch channel is rather thin and can be compressed. Have you tried picking up something like a TS7 or Bad Monkey and pushing the crunch channel though? It fattens up considerably with a pretty good rhythm tone going.

ymmak, apart from modding the crunch channel - which IMO, is a very viable thing to do since there is plenty to improve...

You complained about the lack of gain.

So try this.

For the next few days, just use the crunch channel ONLY but turn up the volume of your amp. For practice or bedroom jamming.

You'll be surprised at how little gain you actually really need.

Unless you play metal and metal only.

thanks guys for all the feedbacks and opinions. after playing with my sd2, i guess it is a keeper for the price i bought it. anyway, i got 1 qns. i heard the sd1 uses a jrc4558d chip, same as the vintage ts808. i wonder whether the sd2 uses a 4558 as well. does anyone knoe?

open it up and look. Go on... do it slow, pry it open carefully, explore. If a solder joint breaks, hop by some of the modder's place (Edder, Blueark, etc) and ask them for help... then bug them for advice, play their gear, buy them kopi.


Btw, the 4558 - its kind of overrated lah. Cloudy, muddy tone = vintage though so uh.. yeah.

You are contradicting .... first you want the crunch to have more gain then you are considering a 808 mod which is pretty much low gainish.

Btw when you play a louder amp besides your bedroom you can achive higher gain on an already overdriven amp ...yes ?!
Let just say prefer your bedroom, then i would suggest putting an overdrive before your sd2 to increase your crunch gain which i assume is your fav ?!!

Looking at the schematic it shows one od type single stage opamp (crunch) circuit with LED clippers in parallel switchable to a distortion with a 5 stage opamp with LED clipper (yucks).

sgt, no amount of modding can get an SD-2 to sound like an TS. my suggestion would be to buy a TS, stack it with your SD-2 and try to see if you can tweak out something you like. the idea is to play around to see if you can get the tone you want. if a certain pedal cant get you what you want, I suggest selling it off and getting something new rather than working around the same few pedals that you have. you bought it for a good price right? all the more you should sell it .

another issue would be the amp you use. what you hear through a home practice amp and a full tube amp would be entirely different.

TS pedals are generally known to have a low gain-ish character. most people would use TS pedals to boost a distortion/overdrive cos its considered to be quite weak as a stand alone pedal.
