I want to know ... which boss should i BUY ??? the made in TAiwan (silver Label) , made in JAPAN(black Label) OR made in Taiwan (Black Label) .... What is The difference????

the word on the street is that the jap one is the best, but i honestly can't really tell the difference. i have a jap one up for sale, pm me if you're interested.

DS1 facts and myths

Japan uses a different chip. Some say it sounds better. I think it sounds smoother. But I think stock DS1 sounds like crap if you're using it as your only source of distortion.

Japan DS1 are all OLD and cost $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

Taiwan is slightly harsher for lack of a better word when compared to the Japanese one. But then... must compare only can really see and hear the difference.

Again... stock DS1 sounds like crap.

Japan or Taiwan doesn't matter to me. Get the cheapest one available and mod it.

More bang for the buck this way.

Stock MIT DS-1 are crap to me.

Never was satisfied with it...
I had mine modded but just somehow didn't click.

I have a very early early DS1, prob one of the 1st runs 1979 - 1980 kind of thing... the LED is momentary, only lights up when you step on it... yes, that old.
And i think its the best DS1 for me.
I'll never use a stock MIT ds1, but the MIJ ones, ahhh... i like what I hear.

Oh, the way i would use a DS1 is as a booster.

the stock SIP chip has to go...its bad mojo !! What on earth were people of BOSs thinkin

..a simple circuit usually gets dominated by the op-amp ...all the mods will NOT cut it...what is neede here ia 'Dead Bug Mod' !!

but goose sir...

the mods mostly opens up the bass and gives it a higher clipping threshold thats why the modded pedal sounds...

Bigger
More open

imho... tweaking frequencies works better than the sum of components.

but if we can... get the best we can find and whack it in!

The chip clipping effect's the character n feel of the pedal !!
The stock SIP no fly !
I believe your pedal chip choice had a reason ??

Boss.... as I've mentioned....

but if we can... get the best we can find and whack it in!

My mods done to the DS1 are to tweak the freq and clipping threshold plus a bit of others here and there for more mojo. That itself makes a major difference compared to stock circuit.

Changing the SIP may or may not add more MOJO... plus I've never bothered with them before so not much on hand knowledge on whats available.

DIPs are the way to go! whoo hooo....

The Japanese and Taiwan 1st isssue Black label DS1s use a different chip compared to the current modern silver label Taiwan made DS1s. There is a difference in the overall sound. Among several factors it's mainly due to the gain factor handling between the old and newer chips. This also means there's more noise and looser or softer character in the older DS1 whereas the modern chip handles high saturation better and has less noise. The modded Jap or modern Taiwan DS1 will both sound good but the sweetspot range for both pedals are different. The modern DS1 has more dynamic range compared to the Jap.

Which is better? To each his own is my best advice.

There are a few version differences throughout the years. The main change, around 1994, was that the Toshiba TA7136AP opamp was replaced with the Mitsubishi M5223AL....both are hard to find!!

Oh well ..what i have found is that even the power supply feed and handling contributes to the overall performance.

maybe i am too fussy 8O

I really like the mod Analogueman does to the ds1.

He changes the chip (amongst other stuff) and the DS1 becomes a MONSTER.

personally i like the MIJ black label/bottom whatever...

the difference is more obvious to me when the DIST is turned beyond the halfway mark. The MIT version seem to break up into... crap noise.
