thumb for the fretting hand go lower, the wrist go more foward infront of the fretboard see if you can stretch

@calpis: Yeah, like Likui said, thumb go low. Try fixating it on the middle of the neck if you find it wandering all over. Basically the lower the thumb, the more area your fingers are able to cover over the fretboard. That, and practice, practice, practice. Over time your finger would be more flexible and maybe you can even stretch through 6 frets :P This coming from someone with midget fingers :P

Uh... I started out playing guitar without fundamental theory so I understand how its a big hurdle to cross when you're stuck with just technical skills. What I found useful to begin with is learning a song key, the relative notes and then a scale in that particularly key. The notes played (solo) over the chords of the same key should be harmonious. http://www.cyberfret.com/theory/index.php is also a good website which helped me understand scale structure and basic theory in layman terms.

Recently I've also improved by relying on my ears more than on tabs or music sheets. I think improvising is a good way to create solos; just go with the feel and whatever sounds right lol. But some knowledge on theory and scales would always be an advantage. Practice on both, if you ask me.

Playing by ear is the best form of developing your musical understanding. There's really no point knowing loads of theory and not how to place all of it together in a coherent whole :D

thanks guys. how about pressing on the strings? i find that my fingers can press the strings down, but some fingers will touch the string below, and end up muting that string. i've tried to move my wrist lower down so that my fingers can press down from above, but not much luck with that.

Calpis: Are your fingernails long that they come "out"? That's the problem when I taught my friends and girlfriend. They always end up muting the strings below because they can't put the fingers perpendicular enough to the fretboard because of their fingernails. Sometimes they have to end up fretting with their fingernails. Put your fingers perpendicular when fretting.

I see, I'll try to cut my nails shorter and see how it goes. I'm probably going to end up taking some lessons to get my basics right first. Once that's done, it should be easier to practice on my own.

Did you place your palm on the bottom of the fretboard? don't rest the fretboard on your palm.

huh???????????????????

He's saying he can't stretch to press down the strings. If you hold the guitar in such a manner that your palm is in contact with the neck of the guitar, then obviously you can't stretch easily. Sorry for the confusion caused due to inaccurate terminology :p

well the best way to hold the neck is not to hold it :D ur thumb should always be behind the neck and if possible parallel to ur other 4 fingers :)

is it really that important to keep your thumb behind of the neck instead of sticking it out?
cause at times when im unaware i've the habit of sticking it out lol and worst still im a player with huge hand using a wiz neck :(
if it's wrong to wrap your hand around the neck.. i dont really see much reasons for producing various neck shapes/radius :o
can someone care to enlighten me

no I think it's important that you feel comfortable while you play and your method of holding enables you to play all kinds of music with out straining your hands
