There is no comparison. Similar looking instruments, different range of notes, different musical approach to playing, different sonic frequency centers, different types of improvisational possibilities, different physical ways of handling note attacks, different traditional roles in any band, even to this day.
- Not even Dream Theater has guit + bass doing unison lines all the way.
- Guitarists are traditionally expected to be choice soloists over bass, because anything that has higher pitches / has a greater range of notes with prominent melodic attributes rather than merely percussive ones will be considered choice solo instruments over others.
- We've probably seen bass players taking solos for a change. What does the guitarist do meanwhile? He dosent play the bass part for sure. His notes are still higher, so its not a bassline is it? Good guitarists play with chords/space/rests to in-turn support the soloing bass player. Listen to Joe pass (RIP).
- Double/Upright/Contra/String bass/bass viola --> cello --> violin
- Electric Contrabass (6 string ++), 4 string bass, Baritone guitar, 7-string guitar, down-tuned guitar :!: and yes 6 string electric guitar. Look at the range...
- Low notes, play less, good/safe. Higher notes play more, ok. Low notes, play more, ok. Higher notes play less, ok. Catch the drfit? Different roles.
- About technique. ever since Leo fender designed his contraptions. Bass players went further left, and guitarists went futher right. People went all crazy about technique and virtuosity.
-If one said bass and guitar are very simliar back in the 50's, Carol Kaye would just ignore you. But youre right. This day, if you said the same thing, most people who know better would tell you that its actually more feathers of a bird. Some are meant to help fly, while others just keep the bird warm.
Pardon the long post. :?
