Mainstream support is mostly tied to media exposure.
Bands overseas can afford to spend more as they are selling to a bigger market (e.g USA). We just ride on the marketing budget spent in USA.

Local acts cant compete and while as Roninriot has outlined in another post the internet offers opportunities, to hit the local mass market we need the TV behind it.

Just look at SG Idol or the superband comps and the hype they created. Couple that to an artists who already has grassroots fan base and we can start to see bands making names for themselves beyond our little music community

i think many prefer to spend their money on things that are "exterior". for example, clothes; bags; shoes; cigarettes.

i'm not one of those.

tell you the truth, im 23. i played in bands few yrs back. i didnt bother to even look at local merch. haha. the first local cd i bought was shoe size nine's best foot foward. and the sound totally sucked. for me if the sound sucks there is no point in makin an album.

so recently i bought plainsunset's new album (forgot the title) and it was much beta sound. so back den i thought that its better to watch local bands live than buying their cd coz they sound better live but now im looking foward for ava's debut album.

so my point is, if the sound sucked, den local bands cheated their fans in away. so the local sound engineers plays a great part in the scene too. you guys noe what im getting at?

Support for local music through media? I won't go for SG Idol or Superband
The problem with SG Idol and Superband (at least, what I feel) is that the singers or the bands aren't necessarily there for their skills. Most of the times, I see a trend that the people with skill are usually booted out fairly early. Problem is that SG Idol and Superband will go with the mianstream trend, and not neccessary those with skill.

Look at Paul (insert insults here) Twohill!! I personally thought he couldn't sing for nuts. Wait, he still can't sing. Anyway, the only reason why he got so far into Singapore Idol is that because he LOOKED cool and all the girls fawned after him.
Well, I can't deny that Hady Mirza and Taufik are excellent singers though. At least THEY rightfully won the competitions
My point is, if we're going to have some media exposure, can we PLEASE only have bands that really deserve it? I think that's why the locals don't support our own local industry (save for all of us here) so much. Because some acts are just... well... neh.
