Apology

I think after today... this will cool down and pple will forget that he ever did this.... Lucky the dumb ebay guy didn't chase leecs for the money or else he can forget about buying stuff from ebay ever again. Now that's pretty screwed up for trying to help someone.

And Shreddy...you nice guy la...honestly I see the other thread liao also hand itchy want to type more, but realise I got no value to add, so I diam diam.

Haha, no, I'm not a nice guy - I have a barbed tongue that I'd use without batting an eyelid - you know that.

However, I like looking at things from another perspective sometimes... the whole issue here got totally topsy turvy IMO and I thought to bring up the other side.

The other thread was totally justified and the fella deserved it. Not this one IMO.

Whee, I'm agreeable with several of your points. Here are some things I couldn't quite agree with.

While it is an unpleasant experience to be lynched on a public forum, but that is the response one will get if he commits an act that is seen to be morally unjust and distasteful, e.g. cheating or rape. This is human nature, and we are all guilty of that (although i can't say its entirely wrong) at some point or another.

I think that the very reason why marxist quoted those things is the very same reason why people misunderstand things on forums.

Its 2 dimensional here.

An example:
If Phanto said those things in person, in a biting sarcastic manner, quite obviously joking - I'd think, there might be a fair chance marxist would have taken it lighter. Though, I reckon those words could very well offend regardless. Then there were the earlier posts from the beginning...

Anyway. I wouldn't be offended lah, just like you. But I'm not so sure I can say everyone else thinks the same... neither would everyone else react like you and I.

Now let's look at this objectively; if we were to pass judgement on his character before his replies - it is fair to assume that we are only seeing one side of the story. However, he has made his speech - and well, his replies did rile the readers further because he appeared absolutely unrepentant by saying "why are you people so petty about this?". This is because it has nothing to do with being petty but everything to do with the fact that he did something wrong and should jolly well be prepared to face the repercussions of his actions. That particular reply however, does show that he feels indignant because he offered his apology and therefore should have the RIGHT to be excused. Obviously, this does not go down well with the readers of the thread, prompting an even harsher response.

And I think weckl-x did a good job detailing what could happen to marxist if things did get worse.

I thought the rest were either joking or letting off steam.

Next, I think you've already pretty much gathered the rejection of youthful inexperience as an excuse or mitigating factor in this case amongst the softies. Here's my take on why:

1. the dude, is 17 coming 18. If 18 years of his life has not taught him simple philosophies in life or lessons such as a commitment means that one has to honour his word, especially when troubling a stranger out of goodwill... then, I'd say he needs to be taught a lesson, the hard way. After all, he has benefited from a good 12 years (at least) of quality education and even that is not enough to teach him something so simple.

2. Is he simple minded? I hardly think so. He has demonstrated the ability to:
- discern and pick out specific models of guitars which are of his fancy; not just pick a block of wood that is called a guitar
- demonstrate reasonable use of the internet by posting, sending pms on this forum. If he is able to do this, he is internet literate - which is the minimum requirement for using the internet.
- able to read; the terms and conditions of use on ebay are clearly spelt-out on the website. One can't feign ignorance on this.
-demonstrate an understanding of how the whole ebay system works; bidding, payment, shipping. of which he managed to respond to leecs before screwing up big time and being very irresponsible.
- you don't need to be a rocket scientist to use ebay. I started using ebay at HIS AGE; and surprise surprise, no negative feedback so far.

3. And as some have pointed out; he is in junior college, presumably year 2 by now. Not that young, mate. In a year's time, he'll be protecting this country with a rifle - in other words, the country deems that at his age, he should be responsible enough to carry out such important duties. Thus, since the country is a mirror of the society's values... society has also determined that he is old enough to be responsible for his own actions.

I've stopped using age as a measure of experience... age is never a proper measure of experience. Its but a rough gauge.

Moreover, being smart doesn't mean you're smart smart. Academics and Street-Smart-Ness aren't naturally related.

For the army thing - when you go thru it, you go thru training before you carry the weapon... that training teaches you something before you hold the weapon. I've heard many many parents comment how their boys turn into men (new topic for new thread!) after training.

And, i am pretty sure he is not out to cheat people or harbour any malicious intent of any sort. Perhaps, just spoilt or naive - but this is NO excuse.

I understand perfectly that you are a compassionate person... but sometimes sparing the rod and spoiling the child should give way to some real lessons in the school of hard knocks. in fact, the dude is lucky so far; if he is in the real world...he'll be in for deep shit.

No, its no excuse. As I've said it, I think the original thread is good enough to knock him around. I just see this as a forced sequel of sorts...

I think people on SOFT have wayy too much time to debate about shit like this.

Biasness? oh c'mon. I have never met an unbiased person. Having first impressions when you meet someone is already a biased opinion isnt it?

For a thread that was originally addressed to ONE person, this one seems to have attracted a lot of bystanders...

Part of society's rules being carried out I guess...

It depends on which angle you look at it. I enjoy talking abt such things, whether in real life, or in the forums - its the same person, so I practice what I enjoy.

Waste of time? Maybe.

Btw, aren't you getting more and more... brash lately?

haha bro.....i rather be straight talking and to the point rather than waste everyone else's and my time beating around the bush. Real life already like so slow reaction, internet is even worse...Like what you said, you enjoy doing it in real life, so why not on the internet too? if it floats your boat, by all means please do. I guess in the spirit of this age of "political correctness" i am considered "brash" and *insert everything you want here, expletives included* in my proceedings. ok i get it. no worries :D

am i so Neanderthal

You can speak like that in real life, that's fine... but here... gotta give you lots of benefit-of-a-doubt-s; its not the same on black & white.

Anyway. Its just brash to me. That's all.. no need for any... expletives.

well ok then to each its own. i guess i prefer being "brash" as it gets the idea across far quicker and to the chase and more efficiently than typing a precarious wall of text that would put most to sleep. And i hate reading in between lines. Some can, i can if i want to but most of the time i cant be bothered to. i prefer to keep things simple and straightforward.

Hope that has clarified any of your doubts on my "brashness". Labels aside, its just my humble opinion anyways.

Hmmm... sounds exactly like me last time.

Anyway, since you've thrown up the "its my opinion" phrase-of-protection, that's that. :)

actually everyone can learn something here, so its not entirely a bad thing since the ad was in a way "fake" and so far there's no repercussions from the bid.

So ironically, its a good thing.

There are 1.4 billion cows worldwide, each producing 500 litres of methane a day and accounting for 14% of all emissions of the gas.

i hate farting cows .....
