Anybody owns softsynths from hardware manufacturers?

I wonder if anybody owns these and what you are experiences with them:

1. Korg Legacy Collection
2. Novation V-station and Bass Station

Heard that the Korg Legacy is a very good replica of the older Korg synths. I wonder if City Music brings them in. Anybody care to share their opinions on the sound? And what's the price like?

Korg Legacy was rated the best in Computer Music last time i checked.

You should get that and write your own review haha...

You can buy it at Citymusic and Korg just announced a free upgrade at Musikmesse for existing Korg legacy digital owners. V1.5 now comes bundled with the T series sound library too, pretty good value!

If you are buying the legacy series then I assume you know the sounds? So no big surprises!...the M1 was on every record for about a decade around the late 80's early 90's.

Yes, I know about them adding the T series into their new upgrade. Yes, I know the sounds and have used them in the past. Just wondering how the software fare against the original hardware, and how taxing the plug-in is on the CPU.

It's great to know that softsynthsa are being developed for hardware, albeit the phased out series. It only means that there's a wider range of selection for us softsynths users without having to get hardware.

What about the Novation? Anyone tried it? As for the Korg, anybody actually tried it? Can give comments?

you can download from any peer-to-peer sharing website
otherwise buy from M'sia JB / KL

Korg Legacy
analog version - MS20, Poly six, Wavestation
digital version - Wavestsion, M1

All these softsynth depends a lot on the soundcard
for sound processing.

Bongman, do you mean City Music doesn't have it?

Sorry, but I don't go for pirated stuffs.

I think the sound of the M1 is better and the wavestation about the same. No analog noise so a lot cleaner, which is either good or bad dependng on what results you are looking for.

CPU....it's a huge hog. Load a couple of synths in and your CPU meter will hover around 30-40% with the synths idle. In my limited experience, it is impossible to complete a project without freezing the synth tracks because once you start recording audio you will be in the danger zone. I am using a 3.2g pentium with 2gb ram.

City music definately has it....

of course Citymusic is selling them.
THe M1 legacy version is $195
and the MS20 version with controller is $790

you can go Korg website to test out the MP3 demos.

Downloading from website or getting the pirated ones is to try them out before buying.

I have the MS20 VSTi version and the Nova bass station, both trial version.
You can have them if you want to try out.

Hi Bongman,

Ha, ha! My opinion about buying pirated software to "test". Buying pirated software already means not much integrity, so how to expect the same buyer to have the integrity, after trying the pirated software, to BUY the original one??!!! LOL

Q: What's worst than buying pirated software?
A: Copying the pirated software - that's the lowest of the low!!

hi Mr QF, salute you and give respect for your gear collection.
For hardware, we can easily go to a showroom and try out but
for software the best thing is to have a trial version to try it before committing to buy.
It's sad to hear piracy it's always a problem in music and
IT industry when it comes to software but to stop it, the
manufacturer should also play a part to integrate a
hardware with the software so people will buy.
That's why Korg has the MS20 hardware controller for the Legacy version

Anyway, most trial versions have limited features and due date, that's why call trial versions.

I'm still waiting for the PC technology to advance to the next level
before I start converting all to software synth and samplers. First in line
to buy - NI Komplete and GigaStudio.

Bongman is right in that many software manufacturers don't have trial versions - which can be a problem for many legitimate users. NI is nice to have trial versions of their products. I only hope others follow suit.

Software is different from hardware in many aspects. We have to deal with compatibiltiy issues, effeciency issues etc other than whether we like the sound or not. Some people spent a lot of money only later to find out that they have some problems using the software. Selling them later can be a real problem.

I don't condone piracy. But I only hope to see software coming out with trial versions. Anyway, I don't think I'll trial run the pirated version either. The reason besides being the obvious, is that installing software into DAW tends to destablise, unless you intend to leave it in there. Multiple installs and uninstalls is not good, even though I have a very good registry cleaner. Even for free VST plug-ins, I only use those that I can copy the dll file directly and not those which need me to run an exe file to install it. I don't like messing around with my PC if it's already stable.

I guess the lowest of the lowest low is copying the pirated software and try selling them... someone was doing it a few months ago!?

Cheez has explained it all about the purpose of trial version. Running different softsynths may cause problems with OS or the sequencer, so
trial is to run and test to see any problems.
