Any Watchmen Fans here? The Graphic Novel not the band

well... fair enough. if its good enough for frank...

still, i thought it was one of the comics that deserved better treatment. lacked the epic & poetic grandeur of the comics.

but for a mindless hackfest it was awesome. :D

epic n poetic? aiyoh, i think frank miller has been anything but that since sin city. granted he's a legend now, he's still more or less churning out the same gritty stuff... alan moore is so much more versatile but there's a certain "englishness" in his prose and story. americans tend to be more sequenced-based and have that everyman angle to it.

currently i'm into chris ware and adrian tomine. chris ware is so detailed in his panels that its really more of a flowchart style. i feel that he could draw google earth! adrian tomine's more indie based "capture the moment" type stuff. love it!

hah. well it *has* been a while since i last read 300. i might change my mind. grant morrison's englishness is more pronounced imo, but you're right, alan moore does have an english flavour to his work.

used to be quite into adrian tomine back in the day - followed Optic Nerve for a while, and i had sleepwalk and another TPB. just picked up the newest TPB recently, can't rem the title - only read it once thru. that guy could tell a story with a single frame. but hard to get into his stuff now, ever since i quit being emo... back when emo still didn't mean floppy hair and mascara ;)

Frank Miller is amazing but he should stick to drawing storyboards and panels which don't require motion between them. Then again, I've not caught the Spirit which I understand is an utter flop.

I'm cool with Zack Synder changing the ending. Alright, he might not be an auteur but hey, if he's doing it, at least let him place his own vision in the film. However, he opened up a Pandora's box. Have you seen the Storm Warriors (sequel to the Storm Riders) teaser trailer? It's like 300 but with... ASIANS. I knew the Pang brothers used 300 as a reference but still...

Comic book reviewers, come out come out wherever you are!

Cool to see so many knowledgable comic book geeks on SOFT!

Haven't bought a comic in years but am trying to get some comic book reviews on Power of Pop so if anyone interested, please email me at info@powerofpop.com

And as for Watchmen movie, so far everything I've seen seems to match the tone and atmosphere of the graphic novel - of course, it could still be crap but compared to the other Alan Moore adaptations, it will be a masterpiece.

Not too concerned about the ending as long as it isn't a set up for a sequel...

I'd take Alan Moore over Grant Morrison anyday, with or without the Englishness, just for the fact that Alan Moore can actually tell a coherent story. Seriously. Has anyone read the shambolic mess that was Final Crisis?

Hahaha, dude, try looking for that graphic novel at the public libraries. I borrowed from there many years ago. Full frontal nudity readily available in our public resources!

It's really good.

I wonder why no one has mentioned Garth Ennis. He's funny at least.

Haha yeah. I wonder if anyone ever screens these comics before letting them go up. I borrowed the Sandman comics series by Neil Gaiman from the library once, which had some really graphic sequences.

bro, you got it the other way around... the book was the giant monster squid and they swapped that out to sthg else...

As far as I remember, in the book was drawn a giant monster squid but the people were made to think that it was an alien, and there was, or was to be, an alien invasion. So you're both right.

Watchmen was so far ahead of its time, and so reflective of the recent 9/11 conspiracy theories. Or rather the conspiracy theories reflected story, since watchmen came first.

Watchmen still one of my all time favourite books. I also have in my collection among others, Preacher, Sandman, Hellblazer (still ongoing!) and my current addiction, Fables, which i highly, highly recommend. <- so many commas.

God it makes me want to throw up to see the tagline 'from the visionary director of 300' as if Zack Snyder is the genius behind it. That film is almost a frame by frame rendering of the book as drawn by Frank Miller - the vision is Miller's. The dialogue is Miller's; the look and feel is all Miller's.

And now, Snyder is taking on Watchmen. 'Standing on the shoulders of giants' springs to mind - in this case those of Alan Moore. Let's hope it isn't butchered in the same way that V for Vendetta was and Moore doesn't take his name off it.

To be fair to Snyder, Miller did an awful, awful job with Spirit.

Hahaha, I love our libraries! Though they just sent me a letter asking me to pay up my fines. Heh.

When our Malaysian friends came to play for our shows, they'd sometimes roam to the library. Most of the time they are very impressed with what we have. I'm just glad that good taxpayers' money is going in that direction.

It's just marketing dude. Hollywood marketing. Why get so worked up?

Alan Moore has already distanced himself from this project years ago. As with any further movie adaptations of his work.

I thought the V for Vendetta adaptation was pretty good. I read the story once. The Wachowski brothers reinvented the story as a cautionary fable to the Bush administration which I thought was pretty cool. Wasn't the original one a commentary about the Thachter administration? The adaptation was far better than the Matrix sequels which were horrendously pretentious and serviceable.

for me 300 was quite entertaining.....for a hack n slash,chest beating movie...

V for Vendetta in my opinion was awesome too......

just hope watchmen won't turn out like the league of extraordinary gentlemen...

I love the comic to death. The themes and the dialogue is so bloody compelling and gripping. I love how it is a comic, yet is so thought-provoking and deep.

BUT, that's the comic. That is Alan Moore at his best.

And from what I've seen, V for Vendetta, From Hell, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, forgive me but Hollywood does a GOOD job in MESSING UP the Alan Moore's work and intentions.

So, I'm definitely going to watch it, but must have open-mind lah.

Oh come on, Vendetta wasn't that bad. FH and LXG pretty much sucked, but Vendetta was cool.
