The Edge`s guitar tone on the Joshua Tree album is absolutely great esp on where the streets have no name..: )

Anyone care to share any delay settings?

: )

for the moment i thought it was jason becker....not sure who told me...but jason's nickname was the edge for sometime...attributed to his sharp chin

if u've been to the 2nd SOFT outing, randolf says the Edge's tone is in using the grooved parts of the picks, like this (the awe-in-ones! omg!):

(the grooved parts are the top parts of the picks shown.)

hope that helps.

the edge's tone is made up of many little things....

imho, getting his way with the delay playing is much more interesting than getting his tone..

i believe edge uses normal picks, unlike the sharkfin types with the serrated edges. unless i'm totally wrong.

for the delays, he actually synchronize his delays' repeat/rate to the rhythm/beat of he song. say the song is 120bpm, he'll synchronize his delay to that beat, but might have it in triplets or otherwise. this can be attained easily by delay pedals/efx with tap-tempo function. but during the release of Joshua Tree, i guess tap-tempo function were not available yet. maybe they were using their ear to synchronise the beat then.

heya ppl, thanx for all ur replies. Yesterday, I played my TGM strat after so many weeks of playing my J&D Tele..then I tried to play where the streets have no name. I played thru a Digitech Digidelay with the repeat knob at 9:00 and time knob at 10:30. And I can get approx close to the tone, just that u have to strum up and down quite fast rythmically on the barre D chord at the high end of the neck, which makes my arm tired hehe...

if its a strat , remember to see your pup selecter its the middle bridge selection.

thanx for the tip! One thing I forgot to mention is I also use the awe-in-one pick using the back jagged edge of the pick and I play near the upper register of the neck and not near the pickup area. It sounded better that way..I think..to make up for not having any EQ pedal and nt to mention a fender strat thru a vintage vox amp...hehehe...

all the stuff about pics is wrong :D he uses HERDIM(german brand) picks, with an extra raspy end , if u see beautiful day , Elevation DVD , u can hear lotsa high pitched sounds , like those toy hammers. If you were from the Old Zoo (zootopia forum) 2-3 years ago , there were like tons of threads on these picks.quote]

Spot on! The Edge uses different picks including smooth teardrops and the sharkfins among others thru the years. The Herdim pick which has a sandy type of surface is what he seems to favour these days as it gives him the ability to switch to a cleaner pick surface by merely rotating the pick around. The Awe in One pick is pretty versatile in that it allows me to switch from a light gauge jangly pick to a shredder's stub and also has the sharkfin for those U2ish passages that I also like to include in my playing more than occasionally. Great to meet fellow U2 fans here!

:D
