Singapore doesnt have much option on the choice of amps or the privilege of trying them out first. from metal to blues to jazz e.t.c. every amp does something good or maybe even all. from bogner to orange to mesa to engl. there are many brands. some of us have been blessed enough to own some of these stuff or maybe try them be it overseas or somewhere here. share your reviews man. there's no right or wrong here. just experience. itll maybe broaden the horizons of what amps to get and maybe we'll see better ones on the forums soon.

sure... but i was thinking that if we had a thread to refer to with all the needs of any amp it would be easier

and different users with different points of views would be great. may point out flaws that a another user may think of as a plus point

ill start it off with a simple review

Roland Jazz Chorus JC120

Features: 8
2 channels. both clean, one with the footswitchable option of Chorus or Vibrato. the other a simple vol/treb/mid/low setting. both channels come with high and low impedence. both channels also have a bright knob which in my experience stays on the off position almost all the time for me. solid state. speed and depth knob controls which is a shared eq for the Chorus or Vibrato,. of course theres a distortion knob.... but......... well.... its not very good being polite.
note, it has a stereo input so can be used in a stereo set up and the amp will automatically become left and right.

Sound: 9(if you don't count the distortion)
Best Cleans in the world for me. used by artistes such as Wes Borland and James Hetfield. it may not have the tube ''Warmth'' we all so desperately seek, but has a chime that no other amp can achieve. EQ settings very sensitive to one another, but definitely an easy amp to tweak. plug and play. the chorus on this amp is truly legendary. frankly, ive very rarely put the amp on vibrato mode cause the chorus is simply stunning. more than any pedal will ever give you. that beautiful transparent jc120 chorus. the vibrato mode is also one to take notice of. it has a vintage flavour to it, but honestly dont know much about vibrato. i do think that the speakers play a very big part to achieving this tone. the cleans of the JC is simply the best to my ears. and i have religiously used them for recording my cleans. also an amp that takes pedals great!!,.. you dont know what your pedal sounds like till youve put it through a Jazz Chorus.

Durability: 9
mines from the 80's and made in japan. built to last another world war. after so many years. its knobs got a little scratchy. but hey.... its all good now

Overall: 9
i love this amp and i have been through many but this remains a mainstay for my cleans. no tube amp has surpassed the pure quality of the jazz chorus to my ears

Those JC are 2sk117 Jfet (transistor) based amps ...lotsa love here!
Jfets are the closest silicon we have to a tube...

I think reviews would be most effective when the reviewer provides a glimpse of his tastes and preferences so everyone (hopefully) knows where he is coming from.

So - i think it would be great to state your preferences TS.

For example - the JC120, you say that it's distortion is "not very good being polite". So does that mean a polite sounding drive is therefore... not very good? Doesn't really make sense does it? Also, that statement doesn't tell me anything about the character of the distortion other than to expect it to be a low gain drive.

Sorry made an error....the JC120 uses op-amp and clipping diodes for distortion and the 2SK117's were used as Fet switching for it's transparency.

The early Roland cube series used 2SK117's as preamp transistors....

Actually, the drive IS quite nice. I played it at full drive with a strat. Nice fuzzy distortion. Quite nice for blues. Horrible for anything else...

i've tried it with humbuckers. but i must say it really does suck. hahahha i didnt like it at all..

does anybody own a bogner shiva here?

i am sure there is someone with a shiva. hmmm... id say the single coils with the distortion on the jc is ... ok la for blues and stuff... but humbucks ita kinda weird... hmmm and yes shred if you neeeeed direct. to me the distortion sucks. i play from post rock to nu age metal;.
