Any guys on this board use altered tunings on acoustc/electric guitar?
Don Ross (fingerstyle), Goo Goo Dolls, Third Eye Blind use them... and I happen to like them all! Don Ross says it gives him fresh inspiration for songs, and keeps the guitar from sounding samey.
Quite curious..

I have a guitar in B. :P

But personally, I stick to standard tuning. Too much to explore there for me...

In anycase, check out Frank Gambale... he came out with some special alternate tuning that totally rocks. I dont' know if he has revealed it... its being patented or something. Seriously. Its on his latest album.. drop by his website.

Well guess will probably try some really weird altered tunings and see if inspiration strikes! Up till now, all I had ever tried was drop D haha..

DADGAD is one popular alternative tuning. I got an issue of guitar techniques which touched on this, can pass it to u.

GGDGBD an open G tuning used by Pearl Jam(for the acoustic rhythm) for the song Daughter.

Can also check out stuff by Sonic Youth who used very weird tunings.

Michael Hedges, acoustic guitar virtuoso and composer, uses some of the most original tunings I have ever seen. Being a copmmoser, he would write the music and find a tuning that allows him to play the copmosition most effectively on his guitar. Check him out at rootwitch.com.

oh great now im addicted to drop c... :D

lol anyone tried drop c on a strat before? i tried it today and it sounded like crap using single coils. constant buzzing. if only i had a humbucker or a dimarzio at the bridge...man..it would rock

one of my guitar is tuned drop C most of the time. Have to use heavy gauge strings for it though 10-52 but it makes it a great chugga2 guitar
