IMHO the decision to buy should be made based on what games you want to play, not what the hardware can do...

This is part of the reason why Nintendo doesn't enter the hardware arms race (the Wii technology isn't a huge leap forward in technological power as its predecessor the GameCube) - they realised long ago that the only thing that matters is gameplay.
that is exactly the reason why i said the Wii owns!

Nintendo is the pioneer of modern console-gaming, and will remain to dominate the gaming industry. They think differently, and thats what makes them great. The Wii's graphics may not b cutting-edge and physics-savvy, but their games will PWN big-time. Mayb for some the new method of controlling looks and sounds too much of a hassle, but there are add-ons for those who want a more traditional layout. There are many gamers who live for the gameplay, and this is for them.

However, for the rest who love photo-realistic gaming, the PS3 is the ultimate machine. Nobody can argue with the fact that the graphical advances are well ahead compared to other consoles. But hey, gaming computers will always reign in the graphics area. Just too bad that most of the fun games, especially the figher/brawler genre, are not released for the PC. Afterall, consoles are stripped-down personal computers made for only one purpose.

Anyway, abt the games for PS3. The arsenal of genres will grow bigger..the top developers have gathered to make every possible game release for the PS3. Ofcourse, Crysis will b too powerful. So games like that will b the only exceptions, they won't appear on any console.

Personally im not too much of a M$ fan. Their consoles are nothing to go gaga over. New player in the industry, and unless they can stop coming up with bloatwares & other irritating issues on the computing side, mayb their ideas on console gaming would b better. Hell, some of their own consoles run Linux!

Any of u still have ur Atari?

Don't let your Linux religion (yes I can see your sig) cloud your judgement dude. The x360 is an awesome console and what they've done with Xbox Live is going to take some beating. None of their consoles run on Linux - that's nonsense.

I had an Atari 2600 VCS. You can get excellent emulators for it now and relive all those old games (yes - even E.T.).

I'm from the old school of gameplay over eye candy, on the verge of busting my pocket for a Wii and still trying to curb it. DS now will fulfil my rpg needs till at least May next year....a list of wonderful games coming up.

Then again, Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is not doing good to my mind recently.....i keep hearing Wii Wii Wii in my head........

havnt u heard of XBOX on Linux? Google or Yahoo that term and u'll b surprised by how many gamers run Linux on their MICROSOFT consoles.

well its a fact that M$ is a new kid on the block. Where were they during the golden age of 16-bit gaming? Nowhere. So their ideas and experience still needs to mature..im not saying that they cant & will not. and no, my Linux religion doesnt cloud my judgements. If M$ could cut down on bloatwares and b more practical with their stuff, i'd have no complaints and b more than happy to use their products. I'v tried both their consoles, and i say it again, they are not as amazing as how most put it. Ofcourse, i love Dead or Alive 4 & later. Probably the only game i'd play if u were to gimme an XBOX or 360. Just because of the upgraded features & visuals hahah..

I think Pong frm the Magnavox Oddeysey rules them all! However there are ppl out there looking for these classics..sometimes i do see ads of buyers looking for Ataris and the sorts and willing to pay high prices. But im not giving up my Atari 2600Jr even if its gonna fetch $10000.

Sure, you can make a lot of things run Linux if you have enough time, MS doesn't ship any hardware itself with it though.

And what has 'being anywhere during the golden age of 16 bit gaming' have to do with anything? Just because someone was or wasn't around then doesn't make them more or less qualified to create great games and systems. There are vendors who survived those days, and those who died as hardware vendors (Sega? 3DO?). Sony was the new kid on the block with PS1 (a 32 bit system) with no pre-history of creating systems, but they went on to create the largest install base of any system with PS2, so track record is no indication of future performance.

Keep the discussion to games consoles and don't bring MS software such as Office and those other things that OSS followers call bloatware into it. The x360 OS is stripped down and sleek and only does good things. Shame - you're the one who's missing out at the end of the day. Like I said in this thread - choose a console for its games - not for who makes it. I'd happily play any Linux-based console (such as Ps2) if the games are attractive.

i meant they are much newer than even Sony. So they still have room for improvements. anyway like they say different ppl have different opinions.

i dont wanna bring up anything regarding those either, coz i'v got alotta things i could say.

u keep talking abt what games are available, but most of the games are released for both sony and microsoft consoles. so in the end where does that "choose a console for its games" come in?

Sure you could, but then you'd be off topic wouldn't you. :)

Not totally true. Yes - there are a large number that are - usually the more pedestrian titles, but the ones that truly differentiate the consoles are exclusive and each vendor has worked hard (and shelled out a lot of money for licenses) to make sure the best titles only appear on their machines.

Examples:

Xbox: Halo, Gears Of War

PS: Shadow of the Colossus, God of War, Gran Turismo

Nintendo: Mario, Zelda, Pokemon

No crossover between any of these titles to other platforms, and many many other examples similar.

but if a particular game publisher wants its title to b released on both/multiple consoles, how are the licenses going to make them stick to one? Because as far as i understand, the final phase of a release is the publishing. Like how the PS3 committee have discussed, this wont b much of a problem in the future. So the only factor left would b the console itself.

werent the Halo episodes also released for the pc?
