Advice on amp

Hey all, me living in a HDB flat, needs help with getting an amp.

Basically, i see myself using distortion from the amp itself and little pedals. I also like a good clean and jazz-blues kinda tone. Just a little confused between the Hardcore Laneys and Marshalls.

I played on a Laney Hardcore and was pleased with the versatility of the amp, not to mention the passable distortion. Heard great stuff about Marshall's distortion, but clean isn't that nice (is it?)

Hope you guys can share some things with moi.. thanks! By budgets under $500

how about a roland cube 30? focusing juz on the laneys and marshalls seemed abit narrow-minded

Laneys have good crunch, but i dunt find the cleans that impressive...
Marshalls, imo, shine only in their tube models and not the solid state amps.. there's better value for money solid states amp out there..

another good amp to try would be the vox valvetronix series.. the cleans are there, but its distortion is a personal taste, may not be hardcore enuff for you becoz it's very clear..

i would advise an amp with at least 30 watts and a 10" speaker, preferabbly 12" as you would appreciate the response and dynamic range from the extra wattage..

=P seeing that ur living in a HDB flat i narrowed down to ss/hybrid amps only

Ahh.. thanks for the recommendations. Vox I have not tried, but I would prefer an amp with a good distortion.

Any brands that have good jazzy or blues kind of tone, or for clean at least?

value for money on cleans would be smarvo, the distortion would leave you less than satisfied so you need a pedal..

haha fender would be nice for cleans and blues..

haha i use a 60 watt tube amp. can go up to abt almost half the volume. i kinda like loud and my neighbours dun complain. well my opinion would be also the vox. tried it and i find the amp settings really nice for a hybrid amp. the cleans are there and the models of distortion are good. quick go get it before it sells out man. :D

I live in a HDB too and i have the vox ad30vt. The volume is manageable, not very loud. even if u find it loud, there's a power damper that allows u to control the amount of watts from 0 to 30w. It has nice cleans and vey smooth overdriven tones. Should suit ur taste in blues and jazzy tones. The amp has a fender twin reverb, fender bassman, vox ac15, vox ac30tb models that may be of interest to u. And as they mentioned, citymusic is havin a sale now, the valvetronix are selling at a lower price than usual.

hey, i usually put my amp at max pre and post gain and put on my sound isolating earphones and strike a note or 2 before putting the volume back... haha

but as for the clean volume... max is still quite manageble for my 30 watts peavy envoy...

Man thanks so much to all of you, didn't know this AD30VT is such a hit with you guys.

One last question, does it really matter how high the waltage is, cos i'm using it for home recording and practicing only, don't feel like spending extra just because it has a higher waltage that i might not need.

30W against 50W for HDB, does it really matter? Is it just the volume that i'm paying extra for? Thanks again

well, if u're really gonna strictly use it for home recordins, then err... maybe the 30 watt one will do just fine...

i'll help u cehck on the specs on vox page to see if there's any other diff

<edit>

apart from he difference in wattage, it seems that the speaker cones are also different...

Speaker: AD50VT = 1x Celestion 70/80 (12 inch 8 ohm), AD30VT = 1x VOX original (10 inch 8 ohm), AD15VT = 1x VOX original (8 inch 8 ohm)

so err, yeah its not only volume i suppose... the 12 inch speaker used on the 50vt may be able to produce a wider range of sollid sounds as compared to the 10" speaker on the 30vt

Wow i spotted one major diff, 30W and 15W uses VOX Speakers, while the 50W uses 1x Celestion 70/80 (12 inch 8 ohm).

Now that's THE diff.. haha

<edit>

Oops.. i think we posted at the same time. Haha.. but that 50W amp should sound better with Celestions..

that would be a big consideration if you want to keep the amp for good, since it's rather hard to hunt down good speakers.

however, i'm really still skeptical about the lifespan of the valvetronix. not sure whether the 50W at Citymusic are 1st or 2nd versions of it. (the former comes ith a heatsink, the latter with a fan, as i read off the harmonycentral reviews.)

the other thing is - a 50W is bloody loud for a HDB apartment. I would dare anyone to put up max controls and still come out w/o complaints from ya neighbours.

and... to play for 5 mins not going deaf

Couldn't agree more, but paying that extra for Celestions might be a good choice. Hmmm.. i don't think anyone will max out the knobs, unless you want the police to come knocking on your doors. :)

Can always adjust the 50W amp to a waltage of 10-20W at home, and then still make use of the tone from the Celestion. In the end, i'd have a 30W (adjusted from 50W) amp with Celestion speakers, rather than a 30W (max) amp with alternatives.

Oh yes and one other thing, i read somewhere that the material on the amp is rather thin, in fact very very thin and easily torn?

I'm not sure about this, so what do some of your owners out there think? Thanks :):):)
