About Fender Strats

wah...this thread has enlightened me to the craftiness of fender marketing haha
i still have high regard for MIA strats but seems like their build quality isnt very much higher than the others. so this is how it a comparison of finishes between MIM, M/CIJ and MIA std models should look like:

MIM - Poly
MIJ/CIJ - Poly
MIA - Poly undercoat + layer of nitro and marketing hype :D

ha ha just thinking of saving up for one. call pai seh la still have to wait for so long before i can buy one. my internship pay so little aiyah...

Looks like certain amount of polyester/polyurethane is unavoidable on our guitars.

It really doesn't matter. There is no proof anyway that either finish is better or worse for resonance or tone quality. Only that a THIN coat is necessary. Even Poly lacquers will change colour in time. If you chip a yellowed nitro or poly coat away, most likely the paint underneath remains it's original colour. Even if it's white.

Ibanez guitars use basswood and Poly. Any evidence that they sound bad? The JS range is proof that this "myth" is bullshit.

Actually, it's not about the coats or the build. Yes, even custom shop pieces can be crap. I think it's more about the wood cuts used in the bodies. MIMs use multiple (as many as up to 5) blocks of wood to make 1 body. The MIAs use a maximum of 3, and a minimum of 1 or 2. Not sure about MIJs though... MIMs use a zinc sustain killing block. MIJs as well for some. The higher end MIJs and the MIAs use steel blocks. Those are the 2 key differences.

A high end MIJ is any time on par if not better at least with an MIA. Just make sure you choose the right piece.
