ok thanks grandpa. any idea where i can test those od pedals? haha is there a pedal only shop?

Ebenex! They've got the ODB-3, MXR, SansAmp, Big Muff, Little Muff et al. Great friendly guys, you'll enjoy yourself hanging out there. You could also find the ODB-3 at Music Theme in Penin...MXR you could also find at Davis or Yamaha...the Digitech Bass Driver can be found at Swee Lee Sims Drive...and the Fulltone if I'm not wrong only MrMisse stocks it in singapore but you could check with superkicky where he got his.

Hmm.... just stumbled on this thread and read it for the first time.

I believe in a good bass, because that already has its own tone and rules out a lot of problems on tone and sound. Having that good bass and knowing how it works through a few different amp combinations saves your life and sound during live shows as well regardless of the rig.

But like the rest of you guys, I have a small rig of effects as well that I had used like 1 % of the time:

1) MXR Blow Torch ( A nice OD pedal like this gives nicer harmonics, plus the fact that this thing can drive at the choice of three frequencies means that I can just add that extra touch to the particular band to shape my sound)I just add a touch, never fuzzy...besides a natural overdriven tone from the bass always gives me a better kick.

2) Bass Chorus ( great for those moments where you need to fill the spaces )

3) bass wah ....erm... its a white elephant, no much use for the kind of hard stuff i play

4) Compression, again, I dun use it that much... fingers do a much better job, but it could be invaluable when i get to a stage that has a nightmare rig

5) Wireless system.... cos I move a round too much and I hate tripping on my bloody cables

6) Bass synth.... used it like for one song like eons ago..... worte the part for it just to utilise the damn pedal

For my last show, and I had a total nightmare rig( well, at least it was for me) took me a lil while to get my usual sound during soundcheck, didn'thelp that the sound man for that venue cldn't quite speak English.... on hindsight, if i had say the EBS or Sansamp DI coupled with an EQ, i could have saved myself a lot of trouble.

Having said that, i agree with most of the folks here that 99% of the time, its clean and our fingers do all the dirty work.

drive4: It's at Roxy Square 2 at Marine Parade.

Ken: Yeah, I lug my effects around whenever I play but apart from the compressor which is almost always on, I don't use the rest very much...most of the time bass just sounds better clean...but sometimes it's just more fun to have a few effects handy lah

btw roxy square 2 is the hotel opp. parkway parade.

haha, i might use it as a weapon of mass destruction if someone threw beer on me at a gig. those things are heavy as!

i guess some people are quite particular about the tuners they use, and one of the biggest factros is whether its true bypass.

100 for a stage tuner is a lot if you don't gig a lot, but if you do.. its a worthy investment so you dont have to replug your guitar to tune your bass offstage..

what i do these days is i got an A/B switcher from www.theblueark.com and used it with an Ibanez LU10, its just a $30 digital chromatic tuner.. but it does the job and is pretty accurate, plus with the switcher, i never have to worry about my tuner sucking tone outta my bass. -)

this was my board in its heyday.. http://soft.com.sg/2006/modules.php...pic&t=16376&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=30

but i've stripped it down so that its the tuner first -> dynacomp -> mxr m-80 and that's it.. i've gotta MI-Audio neo fuzz that i use sometimes.. but that'll give way to the bass synth and woolly mammoth if i ever get my hands on those..

if you want to hear bass effects being used in songs, here are some songs you could listen to

radiohead - myxomatosis (synth)
lostprophets - shinobi vs. dragon ninja (prechorus) (wah)
papa roach - getting away with murder (od)

chris wolstenholme of muse is known to use a russian big muff pi and an akai deep impact synth on songs such as

supermassive black hole
starlight
hysteria
time is running out
plug-in baby
citizen erased
new born
bliss
dead star

he uses a wah and probably some synth on 'city of delusion' during the bass 'solo'

if you were to wiki 'big muff' alone, you would be thrown a list of guitarists and a fair share of bassists who have been known to use the nyc or russian variants of the big muff, including metallica's cliff burton "For example, former Metallica bassist Cliff Burton was known for playing bass solos and riffs through the Big Muff and a Morley Power Wah pedal"

i have surely missed out many others. but i guess this forms part of your "0.1%", assuming you have been exposed to 99.9% of the different genres and styles of music :D
