Singapore's Education System = FAIL.. or not?

my grandmother reading this thread say singapore education really failed. She read through the pages and kept asking me, why they like to go out of point one.

we can actually define this in the simplest of things.

3 x 3 = ?

take 3 stones, and add another set of 3 stones, and another set of 3 stones... how many do you get ? 9.

take square of length side 3cm, and find the area ( 3 x 3 )

you'd find that the area is actually 9 square centimeters. no denying.

its logical that the world is formed on a set of rules that bind us physically, formed with the most logical and simplest equations. such as voltage = current x resistance. and stuff like that.

singapore is the best. everything we do is the best possible. hence if it is not good enough you cannot complain. if the best is not good enough then nobody is to blame. and nobody can be blamed because they are the best, anyone else would obviously be lousier.

Take for instance, why is it logical that 3 x 3 will always give you a 9? Why is 3 x 3 = 9 a form of logic? The answer to this mathematical equation isn't exactly a totally objective answer. What factors actually contribute to the answer 9? Where are they? We don't see it at all and we can't interact with the factors leading to the totally definite answer of 9. It's just like someone shouted down it's 6 and the brainwashed population at the bottom accepted it all without really asking why.

Of course you can interact with the factors to why 3 x 3 give you 9, if you understand the expression.

3 x 3 is the short mathematical for of "3 times of the number 3". Which also equates to 3 + 3 + 3. Which gives you 9.

I don't think the majority of Singaporeans are stupid. Nor do I think they are blindly led. Many of them are busy with living their own lives, and simply just want to get by, and have a happy life with their families.

There are those who do question why, and even in that group, there are those who decide for themselves that the current status is fine, and there are others who decide otherwise. There will always be dissent, and unhappiness, likewise there will always be those who are happy with the current form, and decide to live with it.

The only difference between the 2, are that one thinks he's not getting enough, and the other thinks he's getting it just fine. Of those who think that he's not getting enough, again you'll have those who want to do something about it, and those who just sit and complain.

Within those who decide to do something about it, there are those who do something to benefit everybody, and those who do something to benefit themselves.

The trick is recognising who is who, and deciding who you wish to support.

but pure mathematics alone without any application is pretty much less 'world changing' then maths applied to other disciplines. If that happens they would be known as sociologist, physicist, psychologist, medical researchers and rather than a mathematician. That should answers bobby's question on why there might not be any local mathematicians who have change the world in one way or another.

Pure Mathematics has it's applications in everyday life. Just because you dont' recognise it doesn't mean it isn't there.

Pure mathematics is the very reason why you're able to interface with a keyboard and have your words appear on the screen. It's also the reason why your clothes fit. and alsot the reason why you're able to sleep at night on a bed that's not too small for you.

It is also the reason why thoushands of people spend hundreds everyday buying 4D and Toto.

World changing? The iPhone was designed. That's world changing enough. There's so much of what makes up that phone that's from pure mathematics. Without it, you're not able to spawn a whole new generation of revenue making sources, that creates jobs and brings people together.

What has come out of Singapore? many many things. The reason why we don't know about it, is that to generate some noise these days, you need to fight for international attention with a world audience. Try telling someone that a Singaporean designed something that's voted the world's best IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicle) while he's reading a gossip story about Paris hilton being caught on camera AGAIN. See how much filters through?
