the new and affordable zvex pedals that were featured at namm are out.. and way cheaper than the current zvex pedals. not to mention the handpainted ones.

heh, maybe he's getting there, in getting business from the higher priced stuff and this new line of pedals

oh, the 2n2222 for the mastotron, aint it just a common transistor that can be found easily? Or that theres some special one thats special enough to get mentioned in the description

I guess he finally realized he ain't gonna be rich selling booteek pedals...

I neither agree nor disagree with you here Goose, but what is the border between Boutique and mass produced? Is Fulltone considered boutique? Cos he is pulling in more than $5M USD a year in revenue...

but what is the border between Boutique and mass produced?

Boutique is mainly a marketing term coined by the magazines to label those small makers. $5M in revenues is still small compared to the giants, and we don't know his profit margin from that total revenue. A lot of it could have gone to costs. Even Keeley had a factory of sorts. MI Audio as well. I think they're not making that much less, since the US market is large.

In all honesty? $5M is tiny for the US market.

i doono and i dont care ....coz i am not makin that 5 million....thanks you :)

Btw 2n2222 come in few varienty made by differant factories.
I personnaly like the metal can ones ;)

Hmm, my guess is that probably payroll and operating expenses would equate to be not more than 50% over revenue for these sort of products, especially the bootik makers, as they save moolah on advertising(thanks to TGP) and extensive R&D. Being small and lean would mean that the net profits would be shared amongst a small handful and I would say even USD 1 million a year each maker would make excluding taxes is pretty much decent when we are only talking about exclusively-bootik pedal manufacturing here.

Parts are cheap in bulk, and labour (if needed) could be outsourced to keep margins within reach for the proprietor. Only trade off here would be the number of hours consumed to make and come out with something "fresher" for the market.

I think , if marketed shrewdly, it is still an excellent business model for such a niche competitive market.

This is good move by Zvex as he is already popular and those pedal will sell ...fast.
In other words...he already built a solid foundation for his pedal business...now it's a household name!
So the change from the "exclusive" to "now everyone can fly" will be a big boost indeed...

I do admire his business skillz but not his personality especially on forums.

Box of Rock is a piece of junk....even my mij ds-1 sounds better. oops

Anyways I don consider fulltone as boutique anymore. They've sold about more than 20,000 ocds so its no different from mass produced. Price and hype wise, many would disagree with me though.

It's all relative. Sure - Mike Fuller isn't going to be rich like Bill Gates, but for what started as a cottage industry I'm sure he is making very comfortable profits.

Sorry - the thread got a bit off topic, but what I was trying to say was, I think Zac Vex was probably already doing very nicely even before these 'mass market' releases. Not billionaire rich, but a very good income.

2N2222. Never did like them. All versions from little black ones to tin can ones. Hissy, noisy, buzzy. Never did bother to tune or tame them.

Yep, he's quite full of himself imo. But he did make a pretty good post on HCFX about his business policies.

If you total up all the money I made (in personal income) during the first five years of operating my business, it doesn't even equal the total I paid just in property taxes for my commercial building last year. That's just one expense. When you're unaware of what it costs to do business, you can reach grossly erroneous conclusions regarding what pricing should be. Scale of economy comes into play at a business size much larger than mine. Pedal makers that price too low are unable to sustain or grow their businesses. That's just a fact. Eventually they realize they've been burning the candle at both ends for too many years and they've got squat to show for it.

I'm introducing lower-priced pedals. I'm doing my part to help in troubled times. Check 'em out, and let me know what you think.

My greatest responsibility is to my employees and their families. My full-timers get free health insurance, matching funds on their medical savings accounts, vacation time, personal time, strong living wages, a beautiful working environment, and a hell of a lot of flexibility. I also provide lifetime warranties that are fully transferable to my end users of our hand-painted products. That means you can buy a hand-painted fuzz factory on eBay and if it doesn't work, all you have to pay is shipping to get it fixed. Do you realize what that does for resale value? Buying a used ZVEX Effect is not risky. You can generally flip it for as much (or sometimes more) than you paid for it, even if it was broken when you received it!

My customer service is pretty much legendary, if I do say so myself. Despite the crap you see posted on this forum from haters who don't like my politics or my attitude toward cloners, etc, my service to customers is approximately 16 hours per day. I answer each email individually. I don't use any form letters... I just type up individualized replies to each question, and address every concern as best I can. I also redirect everyone's repair requests to the proper email addresses and handle dealer questions and applications. This is on top of operating my business and posting occasionally in here (averaging 1.67 posts per day). While I was typing this post, I answered nine emails regarding product service and questions. This business is often my entire waking life, from the moment I get up to the moment I crash. It's only recently that I've purposefully scheduled my weekends to spend with my girlfriend, and I'm very lucky that she spends a fair amount of time online so I don't feel terribly guilty answering emails around her.

ahh, ok, i did bought couple of variation of those to play with(from black ones to tin can one) a while back. Think it was in a tri negister circuit of some sort. It was noisy and fuzzy in a mayhem way

heh, anyway, back to zvex new pedals. Anyone if getting it, please undress and post the innard pics. Rather curious on the difference between the more expensive one and reasonable priced ones
