Hey, i am kinda new to the bass guitar and to the forums so pardon me if i post in the wrong section. Well i wanna pick up the bass guitar but so far i aint got any gear or any clue what kind of bass guitar there is and also where is a good place to learn bass guitar from? I read the blog about the bass guitar but i still do not understand, any recomandation of a affordable one for a first timer to use.

Well any help is appreciated. Thx

welcome to soft!

eh... bass... shall leave this one to the pros... but you could try out music schools such as yamaha... look around the bass for sale section to find cheap basses... tgm, sx, squier, ibanez, samick all do low end basses that you should be afford...

read up .. find a teacher .. practice .. and experiment ... you'll learn in such a way ..

What's your budget ?

My Recommendations <--- Purely IMO

1000-2000 - Feel Free to try any MIA Fender Ps
750-1000 - MIJ P ( try to find Alder-bodied ones )
400-750 - MIM P (be sure to bring an experienced bassist along with you for trying purposes, as these vary the most in terms of workmanship )
<400 - Try saving up

It's much cheaper getting a solid instrument to learn that will last you past your beginner times. I myself regretted as I kept buying cheap but not so quality instruments that simply didn't last. I used to use a Cort. Great beginner instruments too. Maybe you could try those.

I have a question abt bass guitars...

Among of all brands of bass guitars, how much the cheapest i can get for a bass guitar? Coz, I'm buying 1 for pastime @ home...

hmm, maybe you could consider a Yamaha bass. Im a new bassist too. I bought a Yamaha BB414 at only $550, decent tone options due to a 3-way toggle switch(giving a mellow to bright tone) with master tone and master volume control. General sound of the bass is good but build quailty is good. Been using it for a year now and its serving me well. :D

I would suggest that you look at spending a bit more for more decent equipment. Yamaha basses would be pretty good for beginners as would the MIM Fenders. Heard good things abt SX too..

i'll be difficult to get good tone out of cheap equipment...that may turn you of bass-playing totally...

you probably need to look at an amp too...the Peavy Microbass is cheap n good. Had one for ages and is still functioning....

just my 2 cents...

you gotta try out sx one by one. Some are really bad, some are not so bad.

mod a not so bad sx and it gets good.

yeah a good amp is important too. I bought a Crate 15watt practice bass amp, Kinda regretting it now. I didnt know better then. I would recommend buying an amp 20 watts and above. So far i have tried the Hartke and Laney 15 watt bass amps and i found out, generally 15 watt amps are not capable of capturing the lower frequencies that give's that bass punch. But this is just my personal experience.

i agree witb musicana... 15 watt amps ain't very good. :?

also try J&D basses, good bang for buck, but be sure to try before you buy :D

Oh ya Zino !, dun forget to account for other little stuff that you would need to buy. A decent guitar strap. (dun get those cheapo one's, you'll regret once you've been holding up your bass for a long period of time). Tuner.A guitar case. And some simple guitar maintenance stuff, like a string cleaner, body polish\cleaner and fret board cleaning. The cleaning stuff are all relatively cheap and will prolong the life of your bass plus it keeps the bass feeling nice and clean. :D :p

Buy the Ibanez pack frm Swee Lee,tt's what I got anyway...Pretty decent,IMO...

But I gonna save up for Fender MIJ la...

Starting good ler...

And go buy the 'Bass Guitar For Dummies' Book...pretty useful...

Hi zino,

i'm also new here. i play bass in my church band. I started off from scratch sometime last year with no knowledge of bass prior to that. We have a 1980's Peavey Foundation in church which still plays pretty well. but i still had to get my own bass to learn. I settled for the indonesian made squier affinity pbass package which i bought in JB for rm1200 (should cost $500++). comes complete with a fender rumble amp and a really cheap gig bag. It's a really wonderful guitar for a starter. finishing and quility isn't bad for the price. I'm now past by beginer stage but the guitar still works for me. a pickup change in the future will bring a new lease of life to it.

One thing though, this guitar is ****ing heavy! :D. the bass is a very physically demanding piece of instrument. i can't do Bill Dickens yet  and my hands still hurt. good luck in choosing and learning your bass

really? it's at least heavier than the peavey foundation. most of the ibanez, yamaha and fenders i ever tried are lighter. bear in mind, mine is the affinity series, cheapest squier available in the market. the standard series and vintage modified are lighter.

does the weight have any effects on the sound?

whoa titus ... yamaha's are heavy .. especially the older BB series on .. and the TRBs ones also ..

basically tone works on the principle of physics .. more mass = more sustain .. some would beg to differ though ..

not really mass though. it's more density ;)

well u can translate it to mass too as bass body shapes and sizes are roughly similar heh.

surprisingly, my alder MIM Jbass also is pretty much a bitch to carry. isnt alder supposed to be less dense?

i wouldn't mind owning the heaviest bass in the world as long as it gives me the meatiest tone.

Tone>Comfort =D

hi,can anyone help me.i've been playing the bass for 4 years on/off.i can catch songs but when doing originals i can't seem to be creative.i either tend to fill too much, too little or the lines are just lame or i have heard them before,i just keep repeating.any ideas?should i get bass lessons?tanx
