Yamaha Appreciation Thread

Yamaha has made some great guitars in the past. There was this LP inspired guitar with great upper fret access. The Frank Gambale model as well as some of their old RGX series totally killed. For some reason the brand never really took off, and Ibanez won the battle.

The LP inspired guitar is the SG2000 and SG3000 (more bling). According to many reviews, the SG2000 sounds like a good Gibson LP Std should, but the former has far more sustain. And the coil split is a bonus. The negative side is it's extremely heavy, about 11-13 lbs! Below is a sample pic of the SG2000:

Ibanez won because the marketing people did its job well. They targeted the younger crowd, especially the metal and shredding scene and they succeeded. Yamaha on the other hand is too diversified in its products, and market segment-wise it sits nowhere in between. Yamaha guitars are either too "uncool" for the younger guitarists, or not appealing and traditional enough for the older ones. But what Yamaha has is the beginner's market and a cult following among its fans.

Dont think so. I think yamaha people just do their thing, they are good and they know it but they dont really show off. I have been looking for a sg2000 and cant find it in singapore. One day I will go japan and get it. I find yamaha guitars very much hidden jems. They deliver. Too 'uncool'? Nah, just need to learn to appreciate

There is just that something else abt yamaha guitars that is different. Anyway, newbies wanting to get a guitar below 400quid shld look at this. http://www.musik-schmidt.de/gb-Yamaha-Pacifica-PAC-112-VCX-vintage-white.html

Sick guitar for a beginner range.

I had that mindset too... but that was so long ago. I really prefer the pacifica neck. :)

PAC 112 Rocks To The Core!

Yea man... The PAC 112 is indeed a great value for money guitar. The stock PU itself does a great job but like many others, I believe it's a good investment to change the pick-ups.

Playing mainly classic rock/heavy rock stuff, sound and playability is awesome!... well at least for an entry-level guitar.. :D

Will post pics when i have the time to upload.. Keep rocking with the PAC 112!

My very own

Since I started the thread I thought it weird not to show you my guitars.

So here it is, pac412v modded and the rgx-a2 modded. Both have their own unique characters and sounds for different stuff and were a bargain for what Ii paid for.

Hope to get the legendary SG2000 and SA2200 guitar when I have the means.

:D ENJOY:D

durable wizard neck!

I cannot begin to tell you how fabulous my RGX 121Z is. I haven't changed the pups but even then, it can handle hard rock to death metal all the same. It's basswood, but don't let that fool you - it's very pronounced on the mids. Some will say it's neutral and doesn't colour your tone, but there's so many factors to tone, you'd probably have to choose which factor is your priority.

The RGX 121Z has what looks like a wizard neck - thin and easy to reach. In a leap of faith, I have tried 010s to even 012s on it, and it still stands strong. I didn't dare to go beyond 012s tho, so am currently on 011s, in D tuning.

I used to be quite touchy about the pickup selector switch when I was much younger - when you flick the switch on a Fender, it almost feels plastic! But then you flick switch on a Yamaha, it feels totally well-oiled and smooth... Haha that was when I was younger lah.

The sad thing about Yamaha is probably that it's range is so limited. Pacifica, AES, SG, RGX series, and you don't have any other lines left. I would imagine they used to have many more series.

I went down to yamaha ystr to try out the SA500 and to my surprise that particular branch (tampines) doesn't carry it anymore. Plaza Sing doesn't carry any other guitars but pacificas D= i was wondering if ay one has seen any store that has an SA 500?

Here's my faithful 1990 Yamaha YG1221. She recently underwent a long overdue refreshing.

Faulty stock tuners were replaced, so were the rusted knobs and trem-springs. Also an overhaul of all the creaky pots, switches and wires. And also some other miscellaneous stuff.

Now's she sounding and playing better than ever.

sexy stuff. Yea yamaha might discontinue the pacifica series and come up with newer models with push\pot as a norm. If you wanna get the SA series, think you got to bring it in through bgw or luther.
