just like the title mentioned... im just curious actually and i would love to hear everyone's point of view... i understand that for local gigs... if the organisers make any kind of money at the door.. it is supposed to be shared with the performers.. is this true? i dunno...

coz i read somewhere in the papers a loooong time ago... there was this caucasian dude who tried to make profits out of this 3-day music festival thingy that was held at bishan or something... i dunno.. i might haf got it all wrong... and a lot of people were quite unhappy about it...

but anyhow... i want to know what you guys think.
WOULD YOU EXPECT TO GET PAID IF YOU WERE INVITED/ASKED TO PLAY A GIG?
if no... why?
if yes... how much do u think u shud get paid?

If it's for friends and charity kinda stuff. I wouldn't expect anything in return. But if it's for other stuff then i wouldn't mind. Cause gotta pay for the regular jammings and stuff like that. Heh. If they don't pay also don't really care la.

This is in regards to your question ONLY.

No. Because I'll be glad to even receive an invitation to play. Unless you're a very established band with a commendable fan base, I don't think you should expect payment. We're not rockstars.

But I don't respect organisers who try to make a profit out of "giving bands a headstart to their big break". If your main intention is to "give bands a headstart to their big break", don't use them to make a profit.

Of course expect to be paid la,dude. Your practise sessions/jamming with your mates for the gig dont need money ah? and then the transportation? and the time sacrificed?

Too many charity spoilts the whole market, think carefully,

abt the issue on transport..jamming..bla bla bla..

think again..

if they're not gonna pay you..why join?? nothing ventured nothing gained..

juz like when u start a business..u cant expect a profit straightaway..u need to build it up..*sorta*

noone's forcing you to play an unpaid gig..u wanna play the gig..the expenses for the rehearsals are urs to fork out.

frankly..i wont be expecting my band to be paid..

Paaaidd la... Rockstar or not will still using out "talent". And performing... Performing is a paid fine arts haha....

well if they don't pay then I expect them to give me band a call for another of their gigs.but being paid to cover jamming sessions is good enough.charity gigs is still okay tho.

Of course you should be paid...... if you're good, you should be paid. if you're not good, of course they wouldn't want to pay you.....

but when you are invited to play, the very first thing that you need to do is to clarify things. Ask whether or not you'll be paid, what is the gig about, if you're not being paid, why and for wad reason..... Then after you collect the information, decide yourself whether you want to play or not..

as for how much, depends on your band....
my friend's band start with 50 for the whole band (sad sad.. haha) and now within 1.5 year ... they get paid 1k+ for each gig ....... and that's because they're good ... If you're good, and the organizer want quality, of course they wouldn't mind paying ....

offering to at least cover cab fare and makan would be really nice, but we're not fussy, we'll play anything. =)

for me , i dun look forward to being paid. i'd be happy to at least share my music with everyone. ha. use the opportunity on stage well.

i think in singapore... alot of paid gigs are Company functions.. Weddings... etc..

For a band that is playing and expecting to be paid, needless to say must have the ability the customer desires. If you leave a good impression, people will remember you and call u if they have Lobang for you.

My band plays for free , esp if its for a good cause or if the organisers ask very nicely... we've played for very very very little money... and we've had the privilege of playing bigger events with "Prompt Payment" as well...

Personally as a guitarist i try to play every gig that comes my way.. from playing christmas carols to chinese top 40s to wedding gigs, to subbing friends in their pub gig... its all a good experience... Naturally i prefer to be paid... but i do make exceptions.

Most of the paid gigs come from "Referrals" from friends or previous gig organisers etc
i dont think the paid gigs would have happened if I or my band couldn't be humble enough to play for little or no money.

Money earned from playing music, to me... is seriously HARD EARNED MONEY.
its COMPLETELY different from the money that is automatically wired to your bank a/c at the end of the month from your day job.

must pay la. if not the band will starve if theyre a broke band. at least 50 for the whole band. can cover their meal already.

well, i did a blues wedding gig recently. 3 45-min sets. each band member got paid $250, plus got free makan and beer.

that was a good gig, but by the time we waited for the dismantling and the money, it was 4am :P

hmmm... thanx for all the replies guys! the reason why i started this thread is coz me and my frenz.. we were actually thinking of organizing an event to showcase our local talents... and i want it to be a paid gig for the performers coz i understand fully how our fellow musicians are struggling just to get their music across to the people... since this is my first time organizing such events... im not really sure of the 'market' out there... so thank you guys for the input... another question... i believe you guys have frequent a lot of gigs thruout ur life... which is the best place you've been to or prefer? eg. substation, arts house, L Cube studio, Home, etc..
