hey man are u saying gigs should be total eye-candy, appealing to the sense of sight? i like a few of avril's songs cuz they're gd, but live? her off-key performance was... well... who'd pay for a mediocre performance? she should pay the crowd for aural-damages unless they were all tone deaf too.
anyhow, since a few have asked of what's good... i'd say bands like Rooney, The Darkness, Mr Big, Van Halen, ... etc.
you don't have to dance - not everyone can. you don't have to jump or swing around - a stunt is cool, but not a guitar in two pieces. dig into the music, moderate headbanging, moving to the music in ways like thumping your feet (some bassists love to do that) or direct eye contact with the audience (vocalists do that, sometimes they point a finger into the crowd and move it from the left side of the crowd to the right if it fits the lyrics).
a local example, for those who have seen skyjuice, they pretty much have the stage presence thing going on.
not everyone is a J Hendirx, not everyone can pull of the M Manson.
